become a member?

No, those aren't pay-services.  Everything you see anywhere on the site
today is a freebie, subsidized ultimately by memberships and other things.
The idea behind memberships is for unique identities, the main purpose of
which is authentication when interacting with the server in commerce or data
contribution.  A member (as opposed to a casual user) of the system has a
page (or pages) on the server, and an identity, and can (will be able to,
that is) interact with the server and with other people in much more
interesting ways than what's simply available now.

Basically, membership will be a requirement for anyone wishing to set up an
on-site web page*, make fundamental data contributions, administer a sub-
group, hold and/or participate in fully-automated server-run auctions, post
server-assisted classified ads (an improvement over the current bulletin-
board-style classifieds available in the newsgroups), etc.

* The web pages will be text- and information-based rather than full HTML.
People are encouraged to get a free site from geocities or tripod or
somesuch if they want a full-HTML homepage.  The idea behind the LUGNET
user pages is to let people share thoughts, ideas, or whatever, in a way
that can be indexed nicely and massively inter-hyper-linked.  More on that
in another thread.
