Hmm, an interesting topic...
One could get a good inventory by noticing that John Doe happens to have
brought set GOB-1234 to Brickfest and then disassemble it to count the
parts. Of course how you get it back together again is another question
(you could always claim it jumped the track....). Of course depending on
the contract agreed to in purchasing the set, the set owner might be
liable. Of course the person taking the inventory could probably also be
nailed with something.
But like you said, mostly worthless. Some of the ways an inventory of a
custom set might be worthwhile:
- to figure out what parts might be hot and make sure you aren't giving
any bargains on them in your Brickbay store
- to get an idea of how much you're paying for the instructions and the
labor of collecting the parts together
- to evaluate whether you have the parts to make N copies of the set
once you've bought one
Like you said, it's certainly not a good way to get the specific parts
(since you're paying a significant premium on those parts, for the
instructions, and for the labor of collecting them).
