(...) The brake function (as far as I know) should not use more battery power as the short circuit is in the driver chip itself. Kingston is almost on the way between LHR and LGW but it'a an awful place to get to and from by car and you'd need to allow at least 5 hours (2 hours to fight through the traffic, park and find the shop, 1 hour to shop, and 2 hours to Gatwick, (...) (21 years ago, 30-Nov-04, to lugnet.loc.uk)

If I am understanding the problem correctly here, you should look into using DCC from the RCX. If I do understand your problem, here is a link to a site where a guy tackles using RCX with LEGO trains, and controls them uniquely well with the help of (...)
