Heh. At 1000steine, they discussed this very issue a while back. I think they
determined that the 4896 came down to a single element that was too new to be
available in the original gray. It's the 1x2 plate with side rod of 2004. See
the handle of glove-compartment in this close-up:
http://www.1000steine.de/temp/4896-1.jpg
It was pointed out that the element could be swapped for black or that a
slightly different element be used. Their post:

(Cut and paste the URL to see the page translated roughly into English)

LEGO retail stores here in Massachusetts got the 4896 sets in stock last week
(Wednesday?) but I have yet to swing by and purchase the set for myself.

1000stein has some -amazingly- detailed pics of the 4896 main model:

BTW, I added pics and info to the DB for NXT supplementals...

And I just heard that our LEGO Retail stores (in MA) are now receiving new sets (Sponge Bob, Avatar, and I think some Batman).

Yes, some very nice looking sets coming out!

Now I just have to hope that every single bley piece in them can be
replaced with grey or some other color...

The way I see it (another anti-bley person here) is if I'm gonna get a set just
to display, then I'll just leave the bley in it.  Either it's on the shelf or in
its box - it won't get absorbed into my main "building pile" collection.

If you're buying for the pieces however, then that's a whole other issue...

In addition, ROBOLAB 2.9 features new firmware to allow users faster processing, more motor speeds, floating point math, improved debugging and programming functions and more. ROBOLAB users ready to get started with the NXT technology will be able to work in a familiar environment to create programs for the NXT brick - from basic Pilot to high end Inventor, and data logging programs. Users can therefore continue to build up their educational robotics resources by investing in the new LEGO MINDSTORMS Education hardware while continuing to use a familiar programming environment.”

It looks like the Swan firmware is now official....

Try one of these:

I have the yellow one from Jessops  - I bought my Dad the bigger red one for his

one has an off-centre screw for some digital cameras.

Ace Kim also got some great shots if you go and check out <www.fbtb.net>.
Thanks for getting some pics up Larry.

I'd have to say the set I'm most excited about from all of that is the Roaring
Roadsters.  Everytime I've looked at it I've noticed something new.  I'm always
excited about Star Wars too, and as silly as I feel, I've already bought all of
the Piraka for this year.  sigh...

Larry-

Thanks for all the photos and the report amid the record 27 inches of snow in Central Park.

If the new Technic motor pack is the black geared motor from the RC race cars, that’s rather unfortunate. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard folks at TLC say “we’re going back to basics” and every time they come out with these juniorized, oversized, studless, colorized, not-part-of-the-system things.

OK, some updates for you. I was able to get to Javits today (in one of the worst snowstorms to hit the east coast in a while, the buses weren’t running, the ride I cadged got stuck, the trains were all having sticking door problems, etc etc... the stuff I do for you guys! 26 inches of snow in one day at LGA, I hear: Record snowfall)

LEGO has a “booth” there. Unlike most booths, open to the aisles, where anyone with credentials (I have buyer’s credentials and Jonathan had trade press credentials) can just walk around, look at stuff and talk to sales people, it’s walled off:

and you have to have an appointment or wheedle your way in. I wasn’t too happy with some of the pics from yesterday and wanted to get some closeups of a few things so I wheedled my way in. But not for long. After talking to a very nice fellow who knew who I was, and who cautioned me that buyers would be coming through so “please don’t wreck any models, ok?... were you the guy that got locked in the bathroom last nite, we’re all so sorry that happened!” (1), about 1/2 way through snapping pics, another, rather more grouchier, exec basically rushed me out the door saying “we have buyers coming, you have to leave now, come back Wednesday.” So I got as far as I am going to get as, well, I’m not coming back Wednesday!

herewith the updated galleries

Misc:

(that VERY blurry pic is from the base of the batman statue and proves the designers use old and new brown together...) The irony of there being a HUGE batman statue and a HUGER Bionicle statue in the entry way with big bold signs saying “HEY HEY COME TO THE LEGO BOOTH IT’S COOL” (paraphrased) was not lost on Jonathan and I!...

Batman: Only a few updates, this is when I got booted out. OK maybe.... “booted out” isn’t the right word, for all I know the chief buyer at Target was coming in the door or something! But while this guy’s style was certainly an entry in the “how to treat fans” contest, it wasn’t a WINNING one...

City: Lots of updates... got a number of shots of the new cargo train...

Creator/Designer: A few more pics of the roadster with the hood and trunk up, the motorcycles, and the big red prehistoric creatures set (interesting joints on that one)

Knights Kingdom: a few pics of the actionfigure/combo weapons paired sets

Nik: A few more Spongebob pics. Including one of the back of the big one. He lobs snowballs or spitballs out his mouth apparently. There are lots of gears and levers for Plankton to control him..

There seems to be a new (or new to me) molded clickrotateaxlevane thingie on his hand (sorry for that technical description!)

Racers: The orange RC set (very large scale parts on that, some new fastener system) and another pic of the racer tuner garage...

Sorry about no technic updates. NOTE. in all cases, the image ID of the thumb I gave is the first new image in the gallery. Seemed a waste to make new galleries. Hopefully modded by the time you read this.

Sorry also about some of them being blurry... it annoys me too! A big tripod with me would have been nice but was just not in the cards, I was at one client last week and a different one this week, needed to leave room for all the catalogs and tschotsckies I got and stuff...

++Lar

1 - I didn’t wreck any models last nite, well not more than 1 anyway (the telehander exploded in my hands while I was extending it, even Steve H. could design it better than that), unless you count turning stuff upside down to get better pictures!... Which, frankly, I don’t!!! ... and yes I was along with someone from the action figure press who had a bit more to drink than I did... but I digress...

Did they have no problem with you taking photos?  A few of us went, separately,
to the UK Toy Fair at TLCs invitation but they wouldn't let me take any
photographs at all.  Very happy you were able to get some good shots of the
Roaring Roadsters set, I could hardly put that thing down.  I was also very
impressed with the Technic crane, and the tractor.

Everyone there was taking photos and no one stopped me, in fact most of the LEGO
people remembered me from last year (I was the guy not afraid to pick up the
models and turn them over to get better pics!). Most of the people invited were
toy press, so they were like click click click, a few overview shots, free beer
and hors'd ouvres and off to the next one... meanwhile I was trying to get as
much detail as I could. I brought a mini tripod this year which helps but I
think (me or) my camera was getting tired, there were some shots I remember
taking that aren't in the collection. Sigh.

Hi Larry, kudos to you for getting these pics out, but...

(after recovering from headache caused by eyes losing sync with blurry pictures)

... Some are too blurry to bear. Did your tripod help? Must be your hands
getting too tired. My suggestion: Bring a full size tripod and set it on the
floor. When not in use, hang it off your back... Here comes Swordsman Lar!

Joe and Jim and I were the only trufans there I think (could be wrong but I
don't remember the BZ guys this year... so Bionicle got short shrift. Oh well...
it has some new sets that come with marble sized balls by the way!)

The Roaring Roadsters set is very Model Team to my eyes. Also it has a LOT of
gray Technic bricks (NOT studless) in the underbelly. Did my underbelly shot
come out... sigh...

We finally get to trade suspension in Land Busters for steering in Roaring
Roadster while keeping the resemblance. I want to get it but at C$90 it's a bit
steep.

Studless battery boxes! But the mounting holes seem flimsy.

Rear dualies in tow truck! Wheeee! Points off for using damped shocks for wheel
lift though.

On SW side, we finally have another minifig scale $150 masterpiece after Falcon
mark 2 in the ISD. This one sure seems designed for play.

Lar, thanks for posting so quickly, and the close-ups showing all the detail.
You do a great job at keeping the unwashed masses informed. :)

Interesting to note that there is no sign of the large Technic farm tractor with
mower seen in the Nurenburg Toy Fair pictures.  Instead, the Americas seem to be
getting a dune buggy based on very similar colors and components.  I wonder if
this will be like the Vikings only in Europe thing?  I notice the dune buggy has
a flat-4 engine built with technic pistons and cylinders.  I think that's the
first time I've seen LEGO do that.
