What a trip I had to Markville!

You guys won’t believe what I got from a trip to Markville Mall today!

Couple weeks ago I picked up a Mars rover for $30 at the Walmart there, with a couple dozens around. Today I picked up another one. They now had 3 left after I’m out the door. ;-)

Then I trekked halfway across the mall to TRU for an obligatory visit. There I saw 7262 on the shelves for the first time - $70. A lady there fiddling with three of the bulky LEGO displays (one Bionicle, one KK2, one SW) told me it is a TRU exclusive. She told me a few other things too: The display models are glued together (as if we don’t know already), they don’t know where or how they’ll end up after being pulled from display, that one of the displays had a broken sound chip waiting to be fixed. :)

She works for LEGO Canada @ 7-45 Mural St. So TRU may have commissioned the displays, but it is LEGO that actually puts them up.

Then, having read all the recent commotion around it, I asked her about the “deal of the year” tubs and ...

“Guess what? They’re right over there.”

I turned around and, lo and behold, two 4679 tubs are sitting right on the shelf!

Who can pass it up? So I grabbed both and head straight to the cash. It rings up $29.99 each, same as for a 4496 at MSRP.

And here is the proof.

(Yeah, that’s me, and that’s how I took the tubs to the cash. Now you recognize me. :) See you at Hobby Show 2004!)

What can I say? I am happy beyond words.

This is the BEST Halloween.
How’s this for a Trick-or-Treat!!!
I feel like one of those lucky people who tour a Lego factory and pick up an
assortment of rare parts…I’ve always dreamt that I’d find 25-30 pieces of drk.
Gray round shields from the classic days of Castle…Man, I can’t believe I’m
telling people I dream about Lego?!?

Anyways, set 4679 simply kicks-@$$!
I got two at ToysRUs, for 29.99.
And the particular assortment was all the two-strap 2814 variety.
I feel it’s the best of the three, with the castle wall 3856 close behind.
Mind you, I’ve only got the 2814 variety with the minifig heads.
(But mine seems to have so many green ones…not a single tan or sand blue)
…I feel a big rtlToronto trade coming on!!!

I’m gonna check another ToysRUs in the T-dot after class on Monday and see if I
can find a few of the other variety…and even if the other location only has the
same variety I’ll probably get just one, for chance that I’ll get the different
color minifig heads!

Oh, and the drk. gray flag and round disks (the ones worn on the heads of the
Orient Adventures) are simply the best…this set makes me exstatic.

Well here are my pics:

Just Wow,

That’s a neat set, that Mars Rover. Everytime I see the one I have built (I got a second for parts) I keep thinking about using those blue panel pieces for a spaceship or something.

I turned around and, lo and behold, two 4679 tubs are sitting right on the shelf!

So these 4679’s are the weird ones with random pieces inside?

Thanks for the heads up Keith. Now I gots to go get me one. Or two.

If you pick some up, you may want to know you can find out a little about what’s inside in advance. There’s a number stamped near the barcode on the tub.

I think there are three possibilities. I’m not sure if all boxes with a single number are exactly the same.

There’s a 3534(?) which has a bunch of 1x3x? (very tall) castle wall type pieces.

There’s a 2814, which has a bunch of heads, and some door rails (pieces that hold motors in place)

I’m not sure what’s in the other tub.

In any case, if you get more than one tub, you may want to make sure they have different numbers.

I just went to my Toysrus in Brossard, Qc. I got one copy of 4679 and here is a picture of what was inside the bonus box. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=961229 There was 5 bags, and they almost all contain the same parts in multiple of 3. The tub was stamped with 3534 and there was 3 plastic straps. I cannot say it’s great selection... And what will I do with so many wings/wedge of only 1 side! I don’t know if I will go for more. 4400 was a better surprise last year.

Hey Yanick!

That’s what I got! Two boxes of 3534! Not as great as those others that people in the States get, though.

And by the way, how’s your new house coming? And when will you re-open your Bricklink store? I like buying from you. ;)

Hey Keith!

A friend of mind told me he got the box with the minifigs head. So there is hope, but I think I will save my money for other sets.

My new house is finished, thanks for asking. I worked so hard in the last months, I did not get any spare time for LEGO! Did you visited my website all summer long to follow the construction? I was surprised to see how many people talk to me about this.

I just reopened my shop, so I will be more than happy to serve your LEGO needs!

Take care, Yanick

ParLUGment has bought many 4679's in Ottawa and the concensus is that the
3-strap tub/box has the wings and wedges, and the 2-strap tub/box is the
sweet box of joy. Also, as an added bonus, the 2-strap tub/box has OLD GREY
inside the tub.
Play well.

Was there a consensus on which box had the big arch part? Was that a two or
three strap box?

From what I see in front of me, and what I have read from other posts
and BrickShelf descriptions, the 2-strap box/tub combo has a stamp of
2714 beside the barcode on the tub, and the 3-strap has a stamp of 3534.
Which should make the 2714 tub old grey, and 3534 new grey.

I didn't get any large arches in my box, but it appears from the pictures
on BrickShelf that they would have been in a 2-strap or 2714 combo.

My 2-strap contents are a variation on this:

My 3-strap contents are a variation on this:

Mine was a one strap box ;-).  It had lots of wings 'n' wedges in old grey (work
that one out).  It was a sweet box of joy.

That box bears a lot of similarities to mine.  Old grey arches :-).  NICE (not
only the old grey arches are similar).  I had less printed pieces though.

WOW!  Seems the only consistent thing is the minifig heads.  I'll have to try
and get myself another one (my parents say I have too much Lego, since the price
on this was so low, I was allowed to buy it, but only one, they figured I'd
never forgive them if they din't allow me to buy at least one ;-)).

The disappointing thing about mine was the huge amount of pink.  OK, so it wasn't a huge amount, but any pink is bad.  My problem (or advantage, however you see it) is that most of my collection is from 12+ years ago (some as far back as 40, I believe (definate signs of very early sets)).  This means that most of my colour collection is in the original LEGO base colours (Blue, yellow, red, white, black).  The knock-on effect of this is that when I get new sets, the colours are far more varied than my collection.  For example, I only have about 20 tan pieces, 30 old dark grey and so on.   Obviously, this means that these colours are difficult for me to use.  On the other hand, I really appreciate the things I got.  I am not disappointed with the blank minifig heads really either.  I'm thinking of ancient, weathered columns here (feel free to use my idea if you think it was OK).  The greebling in the box has been useful as well.

No.

Why?

1. I have already put all my pieces into my complex sorting system, and couldn’t re-assemble the original set.

2. I only have one box, you have two. I don’t think this is a fair trade.

3. I could send you all my pink, but since I assume you live in America. I live in Britain, postage would be expensive. A better idea would be to head over to Bricklink.

4. I don’t have enough pink to make a particularly big contribution towards your efforts at that pig. I have, let’s see: about 15 bricks in varying shades, approximately 10 plates (varying shades) and a few chairs. I also have a few minifig cups. There might be some other stuff, but you get the idea. I have a small amount of purple slopes as well.

Sorry ‘bout that. Peter

P.S. You can send me those two boxes anyway if you want ;-).

Hey Guys,

I went in TRU in Moncton NB, and bought one (with two stripes) and I asked my
daughter to sort the pieces and here is what I got:

Neddles to say that I'm very pleased. AND only 3 pieces were new dark bluish
grey, all the rest were regular light and dark grey.  {;^D

On a funny note, I bought a first one and opened it right away, and there were 5
identical bags of bricks which I didn't like, so I went bak to TRU and told them
that I didn't like the bonus pieces and I want to exchange it...They accepted!

I wish I had more dough to buy much more...

The sweetest selection I've seen posted is this:

Similarly:

An update to the previously stated.
I now have 3 4679's with different serial numbers.
The third is 2814, and it is closely related to 2714 in contents.
It also has old grey's in the tub.
Here's my pix of a 2714, and a 2814 stamped combo after moderation:

Thanks for posting those Tim.
The one in St. Catharines had 2 2714's.  I don't know
if there are more there.  The store clerk found the 2
I bought in their store room (not on the floor).

On your advice (and Tim’s) I got a two strap and a three strap tub each:

This is the three strap:

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/tsangc/My4679/4267-calum1.jpg

I decided to lay them out by bag, thinking the bags contents may be the same while the selection of bags was random. No such luck--the bags have similar pieces, but not all the same.

The two strap is much “weirder” than the three strap pictured above. I guess everyone’s been discussing these, but I just wanted to add my pictures to mix. IT’s kind of fun to get the grab bag. JeffE once told me I was missing out by not buying Pirate, Castle or Space, and he’s right--there’s a lot stuff in the two strap which I don’t have, mainly because I don’t buy certain types of sets. The three strap would be pieces I’d probably pick for myself: Bright regular colours, basic slopes and shapes. But the two strap will be useful to get me into colours I don’t normally use.

Calum, thanks for doing what I had been trying to do! ;) Your pics match what I had counted so far - 2 bags - and now I know what’s in the other 3 and can go ahead and stock my Bricklink store. :)

Oh and these looks all old grays to me.

I’m not sure it all the bags will match-You’ve got to be careful here. Each bag is “just a little different” than the others. Most of the bag contents I’m sure will be useful, though the ones I really don’t know what to do with are these green curved hull pieces. Used with enough joint pieces underneath they would make fantastic jet nacelles, if I was a space builder.

I couldn’t tell. I was looking at a castle 45 degree corner and comparing it against an older corner I had. I wasn’t sure if it was old grey or my old piece was really yellowed.

I’ll probably aim to go get another two strapper.

Thanks again for posting these were available in Toronto. For fun, I bought another two strap today:

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/tsangc/My4679/4679-calum2.jpg

It’s different from the two strap I bought yesterday but didn’t photograph. I think you have to buy at least two of a kind to have enough of something. Some of it is similar to Jean-Marc’s posting, but others are different.

This is a lot of fun, it’s a) nifty to see what kind of stuff is out there--I know I’d probably wouldn’t buy a lot of this stuff in the sets I usually buy and b) the surprise is enjoyable. Setting them all out for photographs to share with everyone and seeing all the other photographs is cute.

You guys won’t believe what I got from a trip to Markville Mall today!

This time I went to the TRU at Steeles/Hilda....

Couple weeks ago I picked up a Mars rover for $30 at the Walmart there, with a couple dozens around. Today I picked up another one. They now had 3 left after I’m out the door. ;-)

Picked up a 4511 at $80 hoping to sell it to Europe for a profit... 8)

Same three displays are here too. Alas one of them is silent.

I turned around and, lo and behold, two 4679 tubs are sitting right on the shelf!

Who can pass it up? So I grabbed both and head straight to the cash. It rings up $29.99 each, same as for a 4496 at MSRP.

Seven units, all 2714s, are within my reach. I grabbed one. There are a few more on overhead shelves. I’m saving my 4th slot for a 2814.

There is a lot of 1x4 technic bricks and yellow slopes in 3534, for those who think you don’t get a good mix. Yellow slopes are best mixed into 4404.

And now, something new.

I noticed the 4679s regular inventory - those in the tub, not in the box - seems to be packed differently between 2714 and 3534. In 2714 almost all 2x2 bricks go into the same bag, but are scattered according to colour in 3534. Anyone else noticed this?

Keith
