While we're discussing these in the same thread, can someone explain the
degree to which Galidor arm joints (aside from the Technic pin) and the new
Alpha Team joints are the same?

They are indeed the same. So are the joints in 8012 Super Battle Droid.

There are two fundamental parts, the socket, and the joint. The socket
has a Technic pin hole, and has a rim with teeth encircling it. The
joint has a Technic pin, with two plastic nubs sticking out the side
which engage the teeth in the rim of the socket. The pin is attached to
a circular piece with nubs which engage teeth inside the joint. Another
part is also useable with the system, the 2x2 plate with Technic pin
sticking out the bottom has been modified to have the plastic nubs to be
able to be plugged into the socket (if you look at it, it used to have a
circular ring, this ring has been cut and now has the nubs).

The Technic socket has a rounded beam (about 3 studs long) sticking out
of it with two axle holes at the end.

This system promises to be very versatile for making smaller mechs (the
joints probably won't hold up with those huge mechs some folks make).

Yes, I think they would be very good for mechas and that sort of stuff.  You
can look at pictures of the Galidor line at www.brickset.com
