Bit of a stretch here:
As long as we're putting up straw men...

I want my free labor (screw you, event volunteers)!
I want my free public displays (screw you, builders)!
I want my free articles and images (screw you, magazine contributors)!

Why is it noble to take money for other people's efforts, but mean-spirited to
ask where that money is going?

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source - Share This
vol·un·teer      [vol-uhn-teer] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking.
2. a person who performs a service willingly and without pay

Dictionary.com
"Screw":

19. to coerce or threaten.
20. to extract or extort.
21. to force (a seller) to lower a price (often fol. by down).
22. Slang. to cheat or take advantage of (someone)
27. to practice extortion

So by definition, it is kind of hard to "screw" event volunteers as they are by
definition under no obligation (except their own self-imposed one) to
participate.

You cannot screw the builders as the builders voluntarily bring their MOCs and
there is no requirement to bring something in order to participate. If they do
not get compensation enough from simply showing and sharing them with others,
then they do not have to bring them. They do so voluntarily. And they also get a
venue to display their stuff for free. Many art museums and galleries or
contests charge the artist for display space. Many are juried and are therefore
exclusionary. I know of no AFOL event that requires a prior jury to be able to
display a MOC.

And you cannot screw the writers as they also do so voluntarily. The writer who
gets published does get a form of compensation simply by the act of being
published. (and the accolades of all those who enjoy their work). Not bad for a
portfolio either.
