I was wondering if there was any interest in tracking down the original authors
of Datsville and seeing whethere they would be interested in changing the
license of the models for Datsville. Basically, I am interested in maybe
uploading the town to a CVS or SVN repository so that continued work can occur
in a visible and organized fashion.

This one's mine: http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dat/models/?n=315
I have no problems with GPL or CC.

This one is also made by me - http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dat/models/?n=285 -
but that's a model taken directly from my old LEGO idea book, so the *model*
belongs to LEGO, the .DAT implementation is mine.

I'm willing to re-licence the two models that are discussed in this posting

Awesome, guys! I've been exploring hosting options on SourceForge. My preference
for a license is CC-LGPL. However, I was unable to find this license in the list
of available licenses. Also, I was unsure whether we may reuse the title,
"Datsville". Do we have to wait until everyone has responded with their
support/permission?

By searching LUGNET I was able to determine that you created a petroleum
station, but I couldn't find the actual model. Could you please re-upload this
file?

I finally got around to creating a repository. You can find it here:

http://code.google.com/p/datsville/

There are only a few files in "trunk/". I need to contact all the original
authors for permission to use their models.

Forgot to add:

1) The license for programming code (POV-Ray, etc.) is LGPL.
2) The license for content (LDraw models, etc.) is CC-BY-SA.

The following two models were submitted by me, Anders Isaksson:

tanders.dat - Original title "My Home", made by me, free to use under any
license. It was originally built in BlockCAD when the world travelling
minifigs Colin & Wanda visited me in 1999.
http://web.telia.com/~u16122508/mwt/index.htm

tuniver.dat - Original title "My little summer house", but everybody thought
it looked more like a university. The model is built by me in BlockCAD, but
it is an original idea from a 1960(?) LEGO Idea Book -
http://web.telia.com/~u16122508/ideabook/11b.jpg
(my render http://web.telia.com/~u16122508/pict/castle3.jpg)

Old-timer Gary Istok has/had some photos on the web of this LEGO Idea which
he built with real pieces. Although he made it slightly larger - quadrupled
the model into a square castle.

There are broken links at start page (Project Home\Summary)
* The current list of permissions is here.
* Some useful links are here.
Click on "here" at both link and you'll get a 404. They worked before, but not
any longer.

Now it works. Thanks!

Next problem: I can't unzip the Datsville Lite archive at
http://www.mediafire.com/file/zlzgjvgym4y/ldr_unoff_datsvillelite_v1_0_0.zip
Both winzip and winrar says unknown method.

Uh-oh! That's a problem!

I used 7-zip to create the archives. I hope none of my other files
suffer from this as well.

In the meantime, you can also get DV lite from here:

No, that's not a problem anymore. I just installed 7-zip and unzipped the file
instantly. All I needed was that info. Thanks again, Mike.

When loading the Datsville MPD file in MLCAD, it asks for two files that
I can't find anywhere.

1. plnxzb.dat
2. 606p01b.dat

Anyone know where I can find these, or how to resolve the issue?

It also reports an error for "tmmayor.dat", but I think I know how to
fix it.

Try this one, I don't know the status for it, and it looks a little wierd, but
no errors.

It's in town_full.dat, right after tbfire.dat. By the file name it
sounds like a "plane" for the "X" and "Z" axes. So it probably was just
used for orienting other models.

Would it be safe to simply replace 606p01b.dat with 606p01.dat?

In fact, come to think of it, I probably added it myself when I was
working with the file years ago! ;)

Thanks, I'll have a look at it.

I'm not sure. Check if there'll be any color changes. It may have been inlined
first, then color edited. But that sounds like an awkward way to go(?)
If you see no color difference, just replace the reference(s).

I've checked this out now, and you can't replace 606p01b.dat with 606p01.dat. It
will not come out with the same colors, regardless which main color you use in
the calling Type 1 line.

Is it an official part? Why isn't it included with the official
distribution?

Is it an official part?

After searching Peeron and BrickLink, I think that this is not a real LEGO part.
There are more of them in Datsville.

Why isn't it included with the official distribution?

If it is an existing LEGO part (which I tend to doubt), the .dat file may not
have been submitted to the Tracker. Those two x772p???.dat parts must be made
from existing LEGO parts, but I don't think anyone has made a better version of
them yet to submit to the Tracker.

Maybe we can replace them after all. Look at this picture:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/40764264@N02/4405232940/
The orange poles indicate the occurances of x606p01b.dat. They are all in
undeveloped areas, so I think it's possible to replace them with other
roadplates.

All models I have created for Datsville are to be treated as Public Domain. Feel
free to use it, update file headers and part references, file names, file
extensions etc.

If anyone is interested in my work to rename, categorize, edit headers, and
correct the files, feel free to ask for the 393 kb zip file from me.

I'd like a copy. Do you have any documentation describing what you did

I haven't got a clue. Never heard of LGPL or CC before. But I would be very
surprised if my terms is more restricted in any way. My terms are: use my
exactly how you like to as long as I have the right to use them the way I like.

I guess you already have seen this link:

Any documentation? Ouch! You just hit my weakest point. This is why I have had
to restart this project from scratch every time...
Let's put it this way: I've renamed all model files to *.ldr.
The first letter is Category. B for building, V for vehicle and so on
The next two is auther's initials. ai for Anders Isaksson and so forth.
Then I try to sqeeze some clue of what it is in the remaining five chars.

An example of my model headers:
0 4558 Metroliner
0 Name: Rjwmetro.ldr
0 Was: Ttrmetro.dat
0 Author: Jonathan Wilson
0 Un-Official Datsville Railway Model
0 Parent: Town-20.ldr

Well, the main difference (I think) is that if someone modifies a LGPL
or CC work and distributes it on the Internet or something, he or she
must also allow other people to do the same with their modified version.
There are also some restrictions on selling the modified work, and
differences regarding whether or not they need to provide the source
code when asked (which doesn't really apply here). In the public domain,
if a person makes changes to your model, he or she doesn't have to allow
other people (including you) to use the changed version if they don't
want to, and they can sell both the original and changed versions
without any restriction. They also don't have to say that you made the
original, and that they just made small changes to it (though I'm not
sure whether they can say that you *didn't* make the original).

Please someone correct me if I got this wrong.

I was thinking that maybe the models/sub-models should be sorted into
"layers", sort of like an image in a paint program. Not really sure though.

BTW, http://users.tpg.com.au/jfwfreo/dvpet.zip contains an updated version
of my petrol station (I forget exactly how I made the stickers although
they are copied of stickers from an official set) that was used when the
petrol station was entered into (and won) the MOTM contest for September
2000. Feel free to make use of it (I think its better than the old

Thanks. I've uploaded it to the repository. Unfortunately, the Shell

I, Tore Eriksson and Martin Palmberg, former Martin Svensson, accept the terms
of LGPL and/or CC as applied to our works in the Datsville project(s).

In case of LGPL and/or CC are somerhow incompatible with PD, our works are no
longer PD.

Please feel free to include my petrol hoses found in _bjwgs51.ldr as used in
_bjwgas5.ldr from my unoffocial Datsville files. Rename, inline, and alter at
will.

It says "Author: Jonathan Wilson", but I think I made the hoses and forgot to
alter the author info. But never mind, if I've made that mistake, that's alright
with me. Rather that than risking to take the credit for his work.

I plan on using your revisions as a basis once more people start coming
forward with their permissions. No need to re-invent the wheel. Also, if
you would like to become a project member you can make modifications
directly to the repository. I think all you need to do is register using
your gmail account.

That would be really cool! Just review them carefully first since I may have
made some fatal mistakes, like at the Town Hall.

I just corrected one at the Water Tower. I think it was due to the unofficial
version of a part was differently oriented compared to the official one I
replaced it with.

I will see if I can join your project at Google Code.

Some people here at Lugnet have contact with TLC officials. I wonder if TLC
wouldn't be willing to let go of their exclusive rights to their intellectual
properties in the spirit of Fair Play on Datsville models already included. I
think it would be worth a try. Or else, we may have to alter some [small?]
details in order to make them MOC's?

That wouldn't work. The MOC would have to be unrecognizable when

Thanks.

Well, the displayed adress at lugnet at least contains a 'spamblock' which
makes it not *directly* useful (although any harvester is probably able to
REMOVE the right thing from it...)., but I should probably change that
too...

It's not a big problem, I just want the most suitable adress be connected to
my LEGO appearance.

(I originally sent this to Michael Horvath directly, but I can post to Lugnet
now, so for the public record...)

Looks like you got lucky, I just happened to be poking around in some of my old
bookmarks today and browsed the Lugnet news page again.

I'm afraid that my old mail address is a bit out of date, as I've switched ISPs
several times since the model was originally published.
(Wow, that was posted 10 years ago. I was only 12 years old at the
time!)

You are free to apply an LGPL license to the models that I posted in the
threads:

http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dat/models/?n=305 (one of the replies to this
contains a better version than the original post, iirc)
http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dat/models/?n=747
http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dat/models/?n=838

and use them as you see fit!

I’m open to changing the license. (L)GPL is fine with me. I think the same goes for the Creative Commons licenses, but I would have to take a look to make sure.

Basically, I am interested in maybe uploading the town to a CVS or SVN repository so that continued work can occur in a visible and organized fashion.

A publicly visible version control repository is a very good idea. (Wouldn’t a DVCS (like Git, Mercurial or Monotone) make more sense than a CVCS?)

Play well,

Jacob
