Who says I don't? Soren, for example, is one of my favorite builders, and a
person I look up to and admire and turn to for tutelage (is that even a word?),
and in fact those are his comments (except for the "wtf, mate") that spurred my
random ps fun. Not that I'm trying to shove off the blame, I wouldn't want to
take credit for something I didn't do, after all.
> I am sure this model took hours of hard work for Hiron to create.
I'm sure it did, he's a person that oughta be respected, he's certainly earned
it.
> Did you get the builder's permission to re-post their work?
No, did you (<http://news.lugnet.com/build/mecha/?n=13288>)? Did Soren? Anyone
with an IQ higher than that of a chocolate dipped cricket can tell it's not
mine, and I never claimed it was.
> Also, please do not post profanity on this newsgroup.
D'oh, I didn't realize there was a law against that. I've seen so many posts
with it in here that had gone without reprimands, it hadn't crossed my mind.
Ah, Soren was kind enough to prevent me from suiciding my time here on Lugnet.
I saw John's post, and I will admit that I'd never read the TOS. I wasn't aware
that it was "illegal," so to speak, and while I would personally debate that my
having fun is disappointing, I can understand I suppose where he's coming from.
My apologies for having fun and in doing so apparently breaking a rule.
It was all just in good fun folks, never meant to harm anyone's sensibilities.

There is no need to apologize for having fun. That is why we are all here. But
it is important that necessary we all have fun playing by the rules. That is
what leg godt is all about. Some folks are a little more sensitive to
colorful language than others, especially minors. So it is out of respect to

No respect for the builder's copy written photos.
No respect for the Terms of Service for Brickshelf, Maj.com, or Lugnet.
No meaningful comment on the model itself.
Come on, I laughed at first and then thought, "dang, that really isn't cool."
Stefan, my concern is for how Hiron would feel seeing his photos manipulated
like that. You have stolen from the builder. Not fair, not cool.
Please let us not argue. Just please don't do stuff like that.
Let's have respect for one another.
Taking people's images from Brickshelf has got to be one of the worst things a
Lego Fan can do.
The only thing I would add is the fact that there is a cultural/language barrier
in place here. Hiron may not understand what you are doing.
Builders may see this and begin to worry that their images will be hijacked as
this was. I fear people may not want to share as openly if they think stuff like
this is going to happen.
I for one enjoy seeing creations by others. I like the work you do as well.
Thank you.
e
P.S. I created the Brickshelf Find section of build.mecha to showcase and help
promote the work of others. It is encouragement to them the builders and to
others who may gain ideas. I only use transcluding. I never abuse it.

Moving back to admin.terms since this is not an off topic debate.
The images do not *clearly* violate TOS if they have been moderated.
Considering the size and obviousness of the lettering, it cant be argued that
the admins didnt see it, and as such they are implicitly stating they are not
in violation of that sites TOS. Ive seen far worse here on Lugnet, on MAJ,
and on Brickshelf that no one has complained about.
As for your statements about growing incivility in our culture, that doesnt
really apply here and just seems designed to push peoples buttons.

That MOC's merit stands on its own. Lame excuse for poor behavior!

If people outside the LUGNET community build, let's talk about it.
I think it is wrong to use their work AND property for our ill purposes.
You know what's going on here Soren. How about taking responsibility for last
week's actions. They certainly have shown people follow your own folly.
Your actions make this place what it is. Try to make your contributions more
positive. Stefan straight out said, joking or not that he looks up to you.
I guess he saw what you did last week and thought this was ok. Not good.
How about saying something like, "hahahahah good one, oh and the second one
hahahahaha, oh, uh oh, actually that might not be cool, and besides, you might
get flack for the words used in the image, oh and the fact that they are from
Brickshelf, mmmmmm, and yo man, that was funny but, for real, that Hiron has
skills! Don't Mock his MOC, that is some seriously cool building. Not to mention
the flack you might get on LUGNET. Ya, better not too."
That would have been good advice. Might have brought the corn factor to almost
nil!
Oh and another thing, protocol...
I'd like to highlight your Brickshelf Find on the sidebar of .build.mecha.
You are one of the few people who contributes to the archive.
I'm afraid with the abuse that followed, I cannot add the find to the archive.
The profanity which ocurs in the thread is not something I want to perpetuate.
I hope you understand why I have not added it to the archive.
I do appreciate you taking the time to point out a great model that you have
found on Brickshelf. I just can't add it. You have Stefan to thank for that.
Now, my replies were to Stefan.
You have no need to chime in again, like typical, and find something to say to
me about it. Defending your actions in the process.
Like I said.
Corny.
How about this, why don't you just challenge me to a MOC build off or something.
Scared? Pock Pock?
End this BS. Because sometime or another we just do the same over...and
over...and over....and you have no gauge to my tenacity.

You want a MOC build off? Okay, lets rock and roll, boy. In accordance with the

Were building this:

Scale will be twelve inches or less, time limit is nine months, and it must be
recognizable as the same model. Judging to be decided by six people - I pick
three, you pick three. No prize. No changing the rules, either - its this or
nothing.
If you want to go scare up more reference pics, look under Akatsuki Hime or

That's really quite true, in a comical sort of way. And it makes me laugh every
time. I think that a build-off is quite the appropriate outlet for your....
distaste for each other. Why not compromise on 18 inches? (What's an additional
six inches between friends? Eric, I'm sure you'll hardly notice.) And yes, some

I find nothing wrong with Soren as a role model, and thank him for showing me
how to make a mech. I'm well aware of the public facets of his character, and

However, I think a great idea would be to add a twist. After all, builder

Erics mech MUST be of a distinct Anime style and have a minimum of ONE weapon.
Sorens mech MUST incorporate technic works for build design. Minimum ONE

12 inches in 9 months. Sorry that's a joke.
No limits just build the Mech, and before the spring thaw.
12 inches or less? Who am I Zizy? 9 months!? Soren and I could spawn a love
child in that amount of time.
...but for real, to do the Mighty Alpha justice, the scale should be
proportional to the kinds of parts required to render the design.
Think about it. How would you build the Mech. The design is ornate and flowing.
Even with my two jobs and my other responsibilities I still can crank out a mech
WAY before 9 months.
After the disgusting email Soren sent me, I have very little interest in doing
anything with him. Not even to wipe the floor with him in a contest.

Oh stop weaseling. You accepted (if I understand your crazy moon language), and
if you want to save what little face you have left you'll do this as is. If you
actually want to go bigger, send me a box of parts to even us out.
(Dark red bricks, plates, and slopes preferred - in quantity, please. Pink
plates, flowers, and other detail-y bits are also good, and naturally plenty of
technic. Oh, and if you have a bag of those ribbed hoses, send those my way too
- always wanted to try clustering them.)
For a guy who calls himself "Legomaster", and claims to be here only to teach

about the idea of building something new.
Bring it or stop whining.

Other than the fact the rules he set in response to your challenge are
completely outside your typical building medium, how are they unrealistic?
Setting specifics of size or parts sets a basis on which to judge. Limiting the
size will also eliminate the possibility of a judgement based on size rather
than accuracy or building skill.

Man, this blows...
I wanted to see a contest. It would have been better than all this nonsense.
Eric, you really should reconsider. I think 12 inches is not a very good size -
Soren, all your stuff is on the order of twelve inches, AND you chose a design
with which you have a lot of experience building. The design is fine, but go
bigger - how about 18 inches. Points off for every inch taller or shorter than
that. And no whining about not having enough parts. This isn't an x-pod build
contest. Spending $20-$50 on bricklink will get you plenty far.
And nine months - that's too long. How about six months? Something to look
forward to before all the June meetings.
If you agree to those terms, and Mark Neumann judges, I'LL take your challenge.
This is Lugnet.build.mecha, not Lugnet.talk.smack. Let's do some building
mecha. Anyone else feeling this contest?

The rules are not 'unrealistic'. Just not very challenging. At least not for
someone with any skill.
Given nine months to build a twelve inch mecha, even someone like me (who's never
built a mecha before) could do it.
Looks like others are lining up for the challenge.
Good luck

Yeah, the rules are generous towards me - I never claimed otherwise. I have at
least three things I want to build before then, though, and the next three
months are crazy for me. So it's not the luxuriant time cushion it looks like.
If anything, the longer time favored him, since he's not used to the scale or
subject. It'd be about forty hours of work for me.
Also, I think I made it clear that he was free not to accept, rather than trying
to chisel better terms for himself.

Okay, fine, you're not whining. But I still think a contest should be a little
more than "Eric, I challenge you to build what I build better than me." I like
the design, and most of my experience is in the 12 inch range; but I like the
idea of trying a completely new scale for me - kind of like and "Iron Chef" for
mecha.
We've all got things to do in our lives - we can't all just build lego mecha all
day, but a challenge should be just that - a CHALLENGE. maybe you can do it,
maybe you can't. But in theory, you should have fun and learn new building
techniques along the way - and most important, have fun!
So, what say you?
Are you up for the challenge?
Eric, man, I don't care what names people call you - defend your building skill.
Win - or lose, whatever. But don't walk away. It's not to entertain Soren or
anything like that - it's for the community. You should throw your hat back in
the ring and say "THIS is how we mecha folk resolve our conflicts - through
competitive building, not name calling."
Let's do this!

Please understand, I asked Soren to challenge me, I did not say "I challenge
you." For whatever difference there is in that, there it is.
I won't enter a competition where I am going to have to use 1x1 clips as hands,
nor wait nearly a year to see the results.
I DO think that if the terms are unacceptable to both parties, perhaps the
rational thing to do is to compromise.
I offered a compromise.
Really I think we SHOULD have a Mecha Contest again.
I was really interested to see if you would enter this past one, the MPC.
Maybe we should just hold a new contest. Lift spirits.
Either way, please don't think I am backing down.
I would have tried to entertain the contest, but I tell ya, Soren's cruelty via
email caused me to throw my hands up and say forget it.
Let me state again for the record:
"...but for real, to do the Mighty Alpha justice, the scale should be
proportional to the kinds of parts required to render the design."
I say we let K decide what Mecha we should build, let him be the sole judge for
all of our entries.
If so, I'll work with Mark to set up the contest, and then step out, and begin
to build.
Soren lost his chance with me, he couldn't keep his abusive tactics out of my
inbox.

Why not have both sides appoint their judges, and then have the judges--off
LUGNET and without input from either party--decide on a set of rules, with no
possibility of changes? Both guys agree by naming judges to participate in
whatever the judges decide on as rules.
And yes, I think that a contest is a lot more positive a direction for .mecha
than all the smack-talking that's happened. The smack has oscillated between
entertaining and just plain irritating.

Chris, you are beautiful. That is exactly why I told him, "just challenge me
already!"
We need a way to resolve our differences.
I am trying like heck to live a good life.
All I get from Soren is heart ache.
Better to have an honest challenge then to continue the cycle of cruelty.
I was trying to follow through, Soren decided to get nasty again, circumventing
the very reason we started to discuss a contest; to end the cruelty.
Still I like what you wrote. You of all people know the legnths I have gone to
in order to support and encourage him. An open contest between the two of us in
good faith to put an end to our differences through the stakes is what I had in
mind.
Like, if you loose, you promise to lay off of me, and if I loose, I um,,,, I'll
give you my ribbed hoses, for your pleasure. Or what have you.
;)
hahahahahaha,
I can't get in to a contest to end this dispute only to have insults hurled
again at me during the contest discussion phase. With such cruelty to boot.

I'll give it a go, and on your terms too. I feel like a challenge even if Eric
doesn't.
Just to clarify: 12" to the shoulders? And does it have to be poseable? I'm not
sure I could build that with any amount of mobility in the hips and get it to
stand very well.
Nine months is fine by me too. I don't live and breathe lego either.

Okay, for everyone who feels like going for it as-is, here are the rules,
expanded:
12" to the shoulders. An inch higher, and anything shorter, is fine - don't get
hung up on it.
Make whatever adjustments you like within reason - color, detail, stuff like
that. No altering proportions or really basic shapes.
Try to keep it articulate, but how much is your call.

When did I say that I am professional, only people who work for LEGO are the
real pros.
I have no will to continue to argue with you. Perhaps we can talk about what
erks you so much. You got to understand, I am not going to lay back and let you
constantly abuse me. Try being nice for a change.
I remember a time when we were cool with eachother. I was so very glad to meet
you. We said nice things to eachother. You said you put my picture on your
desktop. I mean, where did the love go?
Oh I remember, you did a kind thing! You made new Navigation buttons for the
.mecha sidebar. That was very kind and proactive of you. When I told you I was
having trouble with Mr. Johaan my co-cuator and I needed to ask his permission
to change them out of respect for him, you really didn't want to hear that.
You just wanted me to use your nifty buttons. When I said "hey these are cool,
but I have to talk it over with my co-curator, you got really offended and our
relationship has been sour ever since.
You literally go out of your way to harrass me, talk behind my back, make snive
comments and worse.
Soren, I have always admired your skills. Fought like heck to induct you to the
LMHoF. Hung out side with you during Brick Fest at Rocklands, I have given and
given and given. Because I believe in you.
I say no to your Navigation buttons and you make me the worst enemy in your
life.
That is where we went wrong. I have NEVER done anything but be kind to you.
Sure when you say something nasty I fire back. So what? There's that circle
again.
What really matters to me is that you come to grips with your hatred.
All I ever wanted from this place is to meet other people who know what a 1x1
is. Because I don't know anyone around here (where I live) who does.
Let alone a person like you who is a master at building Anime inspired works of
art!
Do you know during Brick Fest 2003 and the NWBC 2003, when people were not
around, I stood and stared at your Mortar Head Mecha. Astounded and amazed.
I still feel like that.
Soren, all you have ever done is judge me on my problems with others.
I say again, I never insulted you, screwed you over or anything.
When I fought with people over my Beeesh Mecha, you sent me emails saying how
you simply did not have respect for me anymore because of my arguments with
people who I have had my own problems with.
Soren, those issues did not concern you. Yet you acted like I was saying those
things or having those arguments with you.
You are the king of the fence sitters my friend. I have been judged by you from
my problems with others.
Then when I say no or hold on to your Nav buttons, you make a circus out of this
sillyness.
I say again, I never had anything but the upmost respect for your bricksmanship.
When we used to chat on AIM the only thing that bugged me was your bagging on
other people's MOCs. Using foul language and other dissmissive language.
Please understand, where I live people treat eachother like that all the time.
I really find it distasteful. That is why I had to start distancing myself.
> Me, when I posted I knew you wouldn't accdept a contest that didn't cater to
> your strengths (sheer size and gimmick value), so I figured I'd have some fun

Not really bro, look. That design you pointed out is amazing. Let's really try
to build it. Not make a nano version at less than 12 inches.
Please, understand, we are so far apart in building techniques we really ought
to settle on a compromise, not attack each other so much. It's gonna be
Christmas for lords sake!
> Fuck this, I'm out of the contest. I got into this hobby to enjoy myself and

See there you go again, and for the Nth time I'll say it again.
I teach kids. I do not do drugs.
It is so incredibly disrespectful to say that and to perpetuate that.
I didn't stand for it when Adrian made his comment, why do you think it is ok
for you to say that?
I want you to know, I have had some friends OD on drugs. I lost them.
So it hurts me in ways you cannot understand when you say false hoods like that.
Some were talented musicans, others were brillant artists who went over the
edge. I live in the city area and it is a fact of life. I can only thank my
father for teaching me to stay away from drugs.
My mother, the wonderful woman she is would not tolerate any drugs in the house,
so you are so far off it isn't funny. Besides, when I am home, we talk and have
dinner. After that, I am out and about networking setting up shows and spending
time with the ladies.
Then I focus and go to my studio and begin to create.
Do you know what starving artist means?
It means I don't live off mommy, it means there are days when I am hungry.
So I work hard to create and sell my art so I can survive.
Then I teach to make ends meet. Which I love. Teaching has taught me many
lessons. Mostly of kindness and giving. We are all on this blue ball together.
> Soren
Soren, give up this fight. You have obsessed over me for too long. Years now.
I stand by my convictions. I have the right to exist without your harrasing me.
I also have the will and determination to see if this grand experiment called
living as an artist will work.
If not, I'll go back to the work force. I am capable. I believe in myself.
What is it going to take to reconcile with you? Certainly not a contest.
Certainly not building until my fingers are bruised.
What ever it is Soren, let's do it. Because in the end it is your building
skills and wonderful ideas that draw me to you. Let go of this anger and in turn
I can let go too.
I admit holding anger inside, though I gotta say, attack after attack and back
room smack to boot, I have a tough time in wanting to be nice.
But being nice is better than hearing your curses and vulgarity.
The measure of a man is in his actions. So now I offer to you an olive branch.
Yours,
Eric Sophie

This is the first good suggestion in a heap of postings. I think this could
really help to solve some peoples problems. I hope it will.
I'm really fed up with this disgusting smack and resmack. This here should be
fun! So let's take it to something positve! Take the chanllenge and participate
in the contest, all of you!
I think of participating myself althoght I'm not used to the size nor the type
of mecha (never built according to a picture not in my mind).

While I am not particularly impressed by the infighting - I love the
idea of everybody having a go at building form a target mecha. How
about we drop all the rivalry, and all have a go at building one. We
could give people bragging rights on "the most accurate" version and
the "most poseable", and other categories, but I think we would all
learn and it would be cool to see what everybody comes up with based
on the same source. That actually sounds like a lot of fun. I also
think 9 months is a bit too long to wait for results, so how about
leaving it open for 9 months, but people post as they go along.
It would actually be a real insight into comparitive buidling styles.
While we are at it, any chance of a 2006 MPC? Is it an annual contest?
If not, why not? Has anyone got a catchy acronym based title for this?
I think we have Mecha Face Off - so the challenge is the MFO.

What a time to wake up from hybernation! I would have to agree with Jeff. I
have always felt that it is much more challenging to build small than big.
After all, the bigger you build, the easier it is to render detail, as the
pieces always remain the same size. Take it far enough and you can build
exclusively with 2x4 bricks. That's not to say I don't appreciate the great
effort that goes into a really large creation. I just find myself much more
impressed by something like this:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/justin2576/micro/barracuda.jpg
than I am with this:
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=10040_1&v=z
Just my opinion, take it with several grains of salt, maybe some pepper, and a
little bit of lemon.

I think Jeffs point is that, whatever the size, it should be consistent as to

Yes, I agree on the fairness issue; I just wandered off on the side topic of the
challenge involved. For those of us who are at our budgetary limits already (I
personally have just sold about $500 worth of my lego to make ends meet after my
employer was bought out and the new owners cut my hours and increased my
healthcare costs,) the larger the size limit, the less likely we'll be able to
compete. So a smaller scale would indeed allow a more fair contest.

Colin

Sounds like you can't think outside your standard mecha box. You have a style
all your own, but heaven forbid you ever step outside.
Come on, take the challenge. Heck, build a 12" one for the 3ft one to step on,
if it's so dang easy.

If by this you mean Jesse Alan Long, of .space infame, why then yes, yes it
is. If you don't know, check out the lugnet.space timeline, under "I have just
five questions for you, Kyle" - an entertaining read.
The esteemed LEGOmaster's bearing in this thread reminds me of this. I'd
hoped to remind him to relax a little, or some might think his writings to sound
a bit...off. He's also prolonging a fight that was never there, another JAL
hallmark.
I was counting on my incoherence in these posts to somehow reach Mr. Sophie
in a language he might understand. And on blowing off a little steam and having
fun, since it seemed the mighty lowercase e was intent on his masochism instead
of seeing the opportunity for fun.
Folks, there's just too much bad out there. We don't really need to bring
it in here. Here should have camaraderie and cheeky fun; it's not supposed to
be that serious. A challenge should be just that - a challenge to try your wits
and stamina; it needn't be seen instead as an attack. Just roll with it, and
play a little.
And soon, you, too, will sing in mighty tones:
You put your red bot in
you put your red bot out...
Yeah. THAT'S what it's all about, BAY-BEE!!
Peace and Long Life,
Tony Alexander
