Welcome back, James:-)

The first time I saw your red double decker I wondered to myself what the • sloped
red window would look like instead of the slanted glass pieces.  Perhaps the • angel
is too sharp.  At the very least it would give you nice separation from window • to
window.

What do you mean by "sloped red window"?  Do you suggest uses 1x2 brick hinges
below regular 1x4x3 red train windows and then "hinging" them to create the
slope for the window?  I can see how I could do the entire second level at this
angle:  windows and solid bricks, too.  The transition to the sloping roofline
of the front of the control cab might be difficult.  Hmm...

I had tried using the 1x2 hinge brick to get a slope effect on the streamlined
boiler of my Hiawatha Loco but abandoned the idea for using the 2x2x3 extreme
slope brick, but that is a different story.  What I am suggesting is using this
window:  http://home.att.net/~partsref/images/4447.gif

I also am a huge fan of the 1x1x1.3 half round brick (and its bigger
brother, the 1x4x1.3).  These would give you a nice smooth, rounded look to • your
roof.  The proto you chose doesn't exactly lend itself to modeling in LEGO
either....

I, too, like the 1x1x1.3 half round brick.  I used those in color gray
extensively in a train called BOB.

Yes, of course I have seen your BOB.  Excellent work!

Agreed, proto is not LEGO friendly, but
therein lies the challenge.  ;-)  I'm not sure how I (personally) would like to
use the half round bricks for the roofline of this double decker train:  the
half round bricks are have "vertical" sides (not sure how best to describe
this) that might make an awkward angle between the slope upper level windows
and the half rounds used for the roof.  Maybe I have misunderstood how you
envision the design?

BTW, when are you going to forsake the Eurotrash and start modeling some real
trains?;-) <Running, to the tune of "The Star Spangled Banner">

I have tried to model "real trains" only once:  an Amtrak locomotive.  Maybe
you've seen it and didn't like it?  Admittedly, I used perhaps a poor image
source: a Marklin catalog photo.  Personally, I kinda like the result I
achieved; but, I don't have an "eye" for the US prototypes.  If I had the parts
to build another cab unit (I think I might have enough, haven't tried) and
complementary train cars (passenger wagon, baggage car, observation car,
restaurant car, tail end car), I would love to continue with this "real train".
I feel this particular train set demands the use of loads of the 1x2 brick in
gray with horizontal "ribs" on one side and the vertical "ribs" on the other.
(GMLTC makes this type of passenger car in 8-wide, I think?)

lol yes, those are my cars:-)

At the risk of offending "real train" buffs, I will humbly admit, and risk
being "outcast", that I simply find the European rolling stock more elegant in
style.  I discount any knowledge of design innovation, technological
superiority, or functional character.  I know absolutely nothing about the "US
school" or the "European School".  It's just a matter of apperance that I
prefer; and, with LEGO that is all I attempt to model: external appearance.

Offending?? Schools? :-)  There is no right or wrong here.  What you do is
terrific!  A little ribbing back and forth across the pond is all in good fun:-)

Until then, I will most likely continue to populate my web site with
"...trash".  ;-)

Thanks for all the comments, John.  I really appreciate the
