I say it's the overheating.
When rtlToronto did NMRA a few weeks back, there were a few engines running for
most of the weekend. I got stupid and put 8-10 cars behind one of my locos and,
after about an hour, it started slowing down and then just stopped. Picked up
the loco and felt the bottom of the motor--very hot!
After a cool down period, and reducing the # of cars behind the loco, it was
fine.
I also seem to notice that the Santa Fe slows down more than my self-made MOCS.
I attribute this to the weight of the Santa Fe--with the basic brick buildup of
the thing, it feels twice as heavy as my other locos.
Keep the rolling stock down to 3-5 units (I run 2 cars and a caboose, 3 cars if
they're exceptionally light) and the trains run for hours at a time with no
noticable ill effects.
