To activate the Kadee(r) coupler's Magne-Matic(r) uncoupling feature.
see http://www.kadee.com/int/c1.htm for more information.

Which my experiments have indicated is woefully underpowered for this
particular task, as well as not aligned in the correct direction when placed
in the holder. Since the couplers themselves are magnetised (or at least the
gladhands are anyway) the magnet polarity needs to be such that N is on one
side and S on the other, I think. Maybe not though... Maybe I just never had
the polarity facing the right way, I dunno.
Your experiments may differ and I would be glad to learn that you have
figured out how to get the LEGO(r) magnet to work in this application. A
complete write up, with pictures, would greatly advance the state of the art
in this area.

Yup... MTron had some too, and I think the ISD might have some, actually,
not quite sure...
http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/10030-1 shows

14 2607 Black Magnet Holder 2 x 3 (Ref)
14 30159 Tan Magnet Holder Plate 2 x 2 Bottom (Ref)
no, those face the other way round... but could be made to work, maybe.
Good luck, let us know how your experiments turn out.
