B units (see my old glossary referenced from the front page of this
newsgroup's web interface) are cabless versions of A units. Usually they are
mechanically identical except for the omission of controls (or inclusion of
greatly simplified "hostler's controls" instead of regular controls).
B units are out of favor with railroads as the cost savings from omitting
the cab initially are far offset by the loss of flexibility when assigning
power to a consist. Some long distance western roads still use them.

| (...) The above link says the Super Chief B units also carried a steam generator for heating / air conditioning, and the A units carried extra water for the boiler in the B units. ROSCO (23 years ago, 20-Feb-02, to lugnet.trains)
