Pics: 0-6-0 Steam Engine —John Neal
My 12 year old son presented me with this loco for Christmas (which he secretly built)-- I was, to say the least, quite impressed with it! Here is how he describes it: It is an 8 wide engine with a 5 wide boiler, with the six drivers powered by a 9 (...) (23 years ago, 6-Jan-02, to lugnet.trains)

WOW! I love how its powered (Chain drive...)! Did you notice missing parts!? Or are they his Personal parts? I think I'll hide my 4-4-0 American longer... Gotta catch some of that detail. Just wish those 9v motors came in red. Anyways, GREAT job! (...) (23 years ago, 6-Jan-02, to lugnet.trains)

(...) My goodness that is an AMAZING present. I LOVE that engine. It REALLY looks good. It looks so AMERICAN. Excuse my foaming but wow. That is really GREAT.      I'm really quite impressed with this. Now, if it were a 0-8-0, it would probably look more like a "real" loco than my Caribou that is downstairs! Please congratulate your son for the good work.      Wow, what a wonderful work! You must be a proud ol'man to have a son with that much talent. That's as good if not better than many AFOL train MOCs. BTW: How come none of us ever built a chain driven train before, or used a combo driver wheels (...) (23 years ago, 7-Jan-02, to lugnet.trains)

(...) No, sleepers are European for ties. Flangless drivers are called "blind" drivers (since they can't "see" where they are going and depend on other drivers to lead them aright), at least in US practice. (23 years ago, 7-Jan-02, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: 0-6-0 Steam Engine —Steve Barile
Blind Drivers, that it. I couldn't recall the name for that. Thanks Lar! I sorta figured that something this had to be done for the longer model RR engines (O, HO, N...) but I was also surprised to find that blind drivers where used for real steam (...) Without extensive lateral motion devices, they allow for a longer fixed wheelbase (and more wheels, therefore more weight and tractive effort) than all flanged wheels.          Re: Pics: 0-6-0 Steam Engine —John Neal
(...) Good question. He tested it out on curve-straight-curve...aight-etc, but not on points (we have no points currently on the layout, or crossings, for that matter). I will have to have him set up some test track and do some test runs. -John (23 years ago, 7-Jan-02, to lugnet.trains)
