Turned out pretty simple in the end, and a lot cheaper than a second-hand
controller. I had to make do with 8V, as it was the only regulator I could
get. But, it takes power from inside the standard controller, so only steps
down from 15V to 8V. And, it makes for a tidy setup. The mod is fairly
simple to make up, and doesn't actually need soldering to the Lego PCB - it
just clips on and easily fits inside.
Surprisingly, I only have the one controller. I've only ever bought one
actual train set (<set:4563>), and that was second-hand. I just don't like
the generic diesels TLC puts out. All the train bits on my layout come from
spare motors, wagon kits, track packs, and My-Own-Train kits. I have three
engines, a tender, 7 wagons and 4 carriages, all MOCs. The only COTS model
is my <set:10017> MOT Hopper Wagon, still intact for now.
Anyway, multiple controllers indeeed. Look at the UK on a map sometime!
Space is at a definite premium.

| (...) If you're not devoting at least 100 ft**2 to your layout, your priorities are wrong. :-) Who needs sleeping space or a dining room anyway? I've been to the UK, don't try to shine me on... it's not THAT small. I saw Huw's layout at the fest at (...) (23 years ago, 28-Oct-01, to lugnet.trains)
