Not sure about the answers to your questions, but I had noticed it myself. Here's a another picture of the overall set.   Powering Power Functions Using a 9V Train Regulator
 
Calling all EE's, robotics nuts, technic gurus, PF fanatics, and electronics geniuses... So by using the PF to 9V connector wire, I can run a PF motor using the 9V Train regulator. Very nice! I'm impressed at how you hid the PF battery box and components. I've tried running the current PF setup in my modern locomotives, but with the non-variable controller it is very rough going. BTW, nice articles and pictures in RailBricks. (...) Thanks for the great feedback so far. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos! I had fun making them with all the different camera angles -- there were quite a few incidents involving the train colliding with the camera as well, so perhaps I should post a (...) That is an absolutely beautiful trainset! Seeing it on the long curves is magnificent. I do have one suggestion/comment though. I need to estimate how much track NCLTC has on hand for an upcoming layout we're doing (first one in a while) and I'd rather not actually count it. Does anyone know how many boxes of 9v track came in a case? A million years ago NCLTC bought a case (...) (16 years ago, 19-Jan-09, to lugnet.trains)

Part of it is by design through LDRAW and LDD, but some construction was improvised either because it did not look right, or parts in that colour are not available. It is 38 studs long, 6 wide.
