Jennifer,

Waffling is OK!! I do it all the time!!

The reason it should be curved is so that as you adjust the control, the
output (link "E") doesn't move. That's why its radius should be exactly the
length from "C" to "E". I agree, a bush would give more freedom in this, but
I tried it, and there's a lot more "play" in the linkage using a bush. Maybe
there's a znap part or something that could do this better, but I dont know
of one. And znap seems pretty hard to find here in Oz, anyway.

The way to get less steering on the inner axles would be to reduce the
effect of the control on those axles by moving the fulcrum (or whatever).

I got the idea directly from the valve gear on steam engines. A similar
linkage allows the single throttle to control speed & direction of the
engine.

And may I also take this opportunity to congratulate you on your latest
"construction construction"!!!

Regards,

ROSCO

Nice one! How did you get the idea for this? It really is quite cunning - • I
am looking forward to seeing this applied in a model. Would I be right in
saying that you could extend this to 8 wheel (or more) steering with the
crab mode having all wheels at the same angle, but the coordinated having
the wheels at lesser angles as they get nearer the centre of turning? I
think you could do this by using curves, as you mention, with the same
curvature on each axle for the "open I" link section used for crab mode, • but
for the inner axles, which are steered less, the curve would bend inwards
more than the curve used for the outer axles, creating less movement on • link E.

Forgive me if I am waffling, it is rather late.

(...) Indeed - but would this not also reduce the effect when in crab mode too, where all axles should be steered equally? I was wondering if it would be possible to get an assymetric effect from the linkage, so that having the control fully one way (...) (24 years ago, 26-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) No, it's not a single throttle. Throttle controls volume rate of flow for steam, valve gear controls cut off (position of piston to TDC when admission is stopped). Hackworth Valve Gear does not have a curved arm, perhaps take a look at it, (...) (24 years ago, 27-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)
