yes, the top left and bottom right have worm gears on them, whereas the top
right and bottom left have plain sleeves on them...but this is not a catalog
picture, and it could have been a "lets see how it looks" picture, that got
used for more than it was supposed to.

This is intentional!  A friend of mine used to work at LEGO Futura, he was
part of the team that designed the Star Wars sets.  He explained the
differences in the set to 'the Rebel Forces always being on the run, they
don't have the maintenance ability the Empire has...'  He described the X-Wing
as being 'pieced together' (no pun intended) with whatever parts the Rebel
Forces have available...

Yes, the designers think of these things!
