Looks like the back half of the shuttle is a light-and-sound element. If the shuttle was any shorted, it would not have any cargo space. (see my message in the "Thoughts on 1999 sets" thread). "we must lengthen the shuttle body to create some storage space for cargo bay since we added our incredible(!) light&sound features to this model, but we couldn't make wings and tail a little bigger, since we were run out of ABS because of enlarging (...) (26 years ago, 2-Nov-98, to lugnet.general, lugnet.starwars)
