Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

I know it is a bit off topic, but it needs to be noted that the original Star Wars trilogy is slated to be released on DVD this September. I guess that is how they are going to raise intrest in the final installment. (URL) (21 years ago, 11-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

(...) that says that the DVDs will only have the Special Editions. Notice that the press release on starwars.com is silent on this issue, since LucasFilm presumably wants some of these to sell. (21 years ago, 11-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

(...) If they had the remotest connection to the fanbase, they'd put both versions on. (...) That's because George doesn't think of them as 'Special Editions'. To him they are the finished films - the ONLY edition. Although there are rumours that (...) (21 years ago, 11-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

(...) It's not 'they', it's 'him'. It's George. It's all about how disconnected from the real world George has become. He is a modern day Howard Hughes when it comes to dealing with the reality of his fans. He forgets that his lovely ranch was paid (...) (21 years ago, 11-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

(...) Yep, even though I already own the 3-tape "special edition" set on VHS, I would gladly pay to get the genuine origional article (also on VHS) (21 years ago, 11-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

(...) I think that smarmy git Rick McCallum can be held at least partially responsible. (...) Indeed. My wife bought me the special edition trilogy for Christmas a couple of years ago, much to my chagrin. When I finally found the real editions on (...) (21 years ago, 11-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

(...) I also think he finally decided to do something about the pirated DVDs that have been on the market for years!!! I used to visit that site often and one note they would post to those who visited the site was there are fakes out there (and the (...) (21 years ago, 11-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

He just keeps getting dumber - no original cuts? what's next?

I knew there was a reason I kept my widescreen VHS trilogy box set of remastered originals around (the one with Vader's helmet on an all black box, very cool). At this point, I'm not going to be surprised by anything George does. He is so encircled (...) (21 years ago, 18-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

(...) My interest in the final installment peaked during the excellent trailer entered in the 2002 Lego SW trailer animation contest! (21 years ago, 18-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

(...) And I'm sure Lucas would advance this as the counter: Ted Turner wasn't the director/writer/prod.../visionary who made the films he colorized. Turner was stomping on somebody else's vision. Lucas is modifying his own work, The other view is (...) (21 years ago, 18-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: He just keeps getting dumber - no original cuts? what's next?

(...) I think he was (key word 'was') both a good director and writer. Don't forget what came before Star Wars. THX 1138 and American Graffiti are both solid, if not classic, works of the screen. (...) Episode I proved that an entire movie without a (...) (21 years ago, 18-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Original Star Wars trilogy on DVD

(...) If my old memory core serves me correctly, Lucas (and Spielberg) argued that the directors of the old black and white movies did the best with what they had at the time. (and yes, they also made the 'vision' argument as well) So in George's (...) (21 years ago, 18-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

In lugnet.starwars, Allan Bedford wrote: <snip> (...) <snip> (...) In my mind, the only 'directors version' that was by far superior than the original (besides the mentioned LOTR--but again was planned from the get go as pointed out) was.. (wait for (...) (...) Hello skeleton! (URL) Harryhausen had this special friend along in his briefcase when he came to Stony Brook! Spreading the inspiration one more time. Ray held to cast models that were as realistic as possible and painstakingly posed. He (...) (21 years ago, 18-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars, FTX)

Re: He just keeps getting dumber - no original cuts? what's next?

(...) Fine, make me dig out the old video... (ah, I don't believe I've watched it since pre-SE days, so I don't mind) Okay, if you have a copy of "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga" (released in conjunction with the THX remastered (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: He just keeps getting dumber - no original cuts? what's next?

(...) Was Jabba supposed to be a slug originally? This scene is included in the novel, and Jabba is clearly human. If the filmed scene was supposed to have an animated Jabba superimosed over the actor, then why was the actor in costume? I'd be (...) (21 years ago, 26-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: He just keeps getting dumber - no original cuts? what's next?

(...) No, and that's the one big thing that I like about the scene not being included in the original cut. It left Jabba open for redesign when RotJ came along, since he'd never appeared in the previous two movies. See, if you make a big hulking (...) (21 years ago, 26-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

(...) In the interview at the beginning of the Special Edition VHS tape, George Lucas says "Originally I thought Jabba the Hutt would be kind of a furry character, like Chewbacca." - Dan Efran Martian Ambassador (URL) (21 years ago, 28-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)

(...) Jabba the Mutt? Wow, I don't think I've watched the SE interviews since I first opened my boxed set. (21 years ago, 28-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)
