I know it is a bit off topic, but it needs to be noted that the original
Star Wars trilogy is slated to be released on DVD this September. I
guess that is how they are going to raise intrest in the final
installment.

Would that it were so, but theforce.net links to a New York Post article
that says that the DVDs will only have the Special Editions.

If they had the remotest connection to the fanbase, they'd put both versions on.

It's not 'they', it's 'him'.  It's George.  It's all about how disconnected from
the real world George has become.  He is a modern day Howard Hughes when it
comes to dealing with the reality of his fans.  He forgets that his lovely ranch
was paid for by my 9 year-old allowance.  He forgets that the films he released
in 77, 80 and 83 were done back then.  They aren't broken and don't need fixing.

Notice that the press release on starwars.com is silent on this issue,
since LucasFilm presumably wants some of these to sell.

That's because George doesn't think of them as 'Special Editions'. To him they
are the finished films - the ONLY edition.

He can digitally 'correct' the films until they are nothing but CG characters
talking to CG characters again CG backgrounds and so on and so on.  He can edit
the real actors right out of every scene for all I care.  But he needs to
remember what made those films so good in the first place... the story.  It
wasn't bad special effects that made those films inadequate.  It was the great
story and the lasting entertainment value that made them special from the
beginning.  He then needs to realize the value of putting out the original
theatrical releases for those of us who have already paid for his ability to
tinker around at will the way that he does now.  He needs to remember how he was
one of the biggest opponents of colorization back in the 80's.  Going back and
updating old films... seemed like a good idea to Ted Turner.  Seemed like a bad
idea at the time to George Lucas.  Too bad money can't buy you common sense.

Although there are rumours that there
will be further farting around with parts 4, 5 & 6 to make the new trilogy
appear less contrived. These will probably come out after Ep III, ensuring
diehard fanboys with have to buy yet another version of the films. How many will
that make it? 5? 6? $$$kaching$$$. Easier than making whole new movies I
suppose.

There are also rumours of 'archive' editions but I'm not holding my breath.  If
George really cared how people felt he would see that this happens now, not
later.  If he does someday decide (out of the goodness of his golden heart) to
put out what fans have asked for.... he may find he doesn't have as many fans as
he once did.

Let's hope there's a new hope and that George gets a clue,
Allan B.

(...) Yep, even though I already own the 3-tape "special edition" set on VHS, I would gladly pay to get the genuine origional article (also on VHS) (21 years ago, 11-Feb-04, to lugnet.starwars)
