I would lay strong odds that its related to temperature fluctuations;
perhaps a hot spot on the top of the fridge. Certainly it isnt because
of weight. For well over 6 months, I had a 26 pound Battlestar Galactica
frame sitting on its end (about 8 studs wide by 6 bricks tall) in the
corner of my Lego room with absolutely no evidence of damage. That same
model spent the previous year under the stairs on 2 feet, one of which
bore 90% or more of the weight, the other was just to balance it.

Heat was my first suspect as well, however what possible source of heat is
there in the center of the top of a modern fridge? The lightbulb inside?
maybe its not going out when I close the door! :) And how hot would it have
to get to fuse bricks together?

Hooray! heard back from CS over the weekend. They sent me back some of the
damaged bricks and pointed out that there was a strong smell of perfume on them
(which I hadnt noticed before) and that they had probably been exposed to a
spill of air freshener which often contains solvents that can damage ABS. I
guess I was wrong in originally dismissing a chemical spill :)
Alls well that ends well, at the cost of my slightly dented pride my ISD is now
rebuilt and once again in pride of place looming over the flat.
Cheers
