Well then Roger Ebert can go fluff his pillows. There is ABSOLUTELY NO
REASON, short of outright and culpable laziness, that a film can't be both
visually spectacular AND dramatically engaging, and there's likewise no
reason that interesting characters can't be developed amid flashy special
effects. The fact that Ebert seems willing to excuse Lucas for DOA
character development is irrelevant.
As a contemporary comparison, we could consider Spider-Man, which as we
know involves a few special effects but somehow also manages to maintain a
tight storyline while simultaneously portraying interesting characters.
Raimi is simply a better character director than Lucas, 'nuff said.
If I only wanted a movie full of "sights," I'd just watch the intro to any
of a zillion current PC games. I expect more from a full-fledged film.
Dave!
