Aww, dangit. I was getting really into this, but that comment about
pre-printed microphones got me to where I can no longer suspend my
disbelief. :)
I think something that'd be really cool would be a return to classic-dom--
space men wearing the nice classic space logo on their monochromatic uniforms,
with generic smileys, but go ahead and use the new-style helmet (since I
suspect Lego doesn't even make the old one anymore...) and accoutrements.
Neo-classic-Castle could also work, as could Town and Pirates.
And I think the trick to how you sell 'em is: Make 'em "freestyle" buckets.
This nets the best of all possible worlds: You don't have to worry
that a twenty-year-old Classic Castle set doesn't have the frob-the-greeblie
appeal that the new stuff with hinges and springs and articulated catapults
do, because they're freestyle-ish buckets. Moving to the more modern versions
of the same parts gets people, for example, classic Spacemen without
destroying the value of the old-style classic Spacemen.
And I suspect you could sell these buckets to kids, not just AFOLs, which
is a benefit re-releasing old sets doesn't have.
Okay, so now I'm getting _really_ out there. You started it with your
no-preprinted-microphones comment, though!
