I did some calculating (http://www.suave.net/~dave/cgi/scale.cgi) of large
space ships to see how big they'd be at minifig scale. I got some
interesting results:

A minifig scale Star Destroyer would be about 121 feet long and 97 feet wide
(guessing that its width is 2/3 of it's length) and cover 5868.5 sq. ft.
That's almost six small (human, not minifig) houses!

A Super Star Destroyer, 5 miles long, would be 606 feet long and 400 feet
wide (yes, another guesstimate) and cover about 121,200 sq. ft.  A little
bigger than the biggest of mansions, and probably twenty times as expensive,
too!

An Eclipse-Class Super Star Destroyer*, 11 miles long, would be 1334 feet
long (4.5 football fields) and 880 feet wide (yet another guesstimate) and
cover about 538,560 sq. ft.  That's quite a few celebrity mansions right
there.

The Death Star (120k diameter) would have a 4521 foot radius and cover
(largest floor) 64,179,845 sq. ft.  One end to the other qould be 1.71 miles
long.  It's volume would take 290,157,078,069.54 cubic feet.  This wouldn't
even fit into a Lego Theme park (unless you include the parking lot)!

The second Death Star (160k diameter) would have a 6028 foot (1.14 mile)
radius and cover 114,093,527 square feet (4.1 sqare miles).  It's volume
would be 4.7 cubic miles (687,779,740,609.28 cubic feet!).  You could fit a
small town into that thing!

* Extended SW universe.  It's basically a transition between a huge carrier
of mass destruction and a huge weapon of mass destruction.

(...) I've always wondered about this (okay, not "always," only since Lucas established the timeline). How in the heck was the Empire able to ramp up production facilities to build such huge vessels, in the span of less than 50 years or so? In AotC (...)
