Hi.

How old is your son? He can probably deal with Robolab Software
(PC & MAC) available from Pitsco. Pitsco also sells a Robolab
upgrade kit which gives you the Robolab user manual and a nifty
green case. (I got case feaver and went out and bought the
fishing tackle box as well. The comment about being able to be
stowed under the seat in front of you is quite well taken.)

Regardless. You can buy a Mac Cable or a USB Cable for iMac
out of Pitsco's new catalogue. You can also separately purchase
the Robolab software. You could also buy Robolab Team Challenge
Set in the first place. (It comes with a serial Mac cable and
an RCX with external power connector.) Team Challenge corresponds
to RIS 1.0 so you will want to get the RIS 1.5 upgrade kit from
Lego Shop At Home. (This gives you a few extra parts including
the infamous "clutch gear" and the RIS 1.5 Constructopedia.)

The result is that you spend a bit more than buying RIS 1.5, but
you get a better set. (Robolab Software is only sold separately.)
Finally, if your son can go directly to NQC, you can skip Robolab
software entirely and download the firmware on the RIS 1.5 CD-ROM
using NQC. (This will require that you "install" Mindstorms.)

You don't need to install Mindstorm to use NQC, only the spirit.ocx. RCX Command Center is a great front-end to NQC. The RCX webpage at (URL) has good instructions for just installing spirit.ocx. ----- Original Message ----- From: Barbara Nostrand (...) (25 years ago, 30-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

I was just wondering how old most of the members in this forum are? I suspect most people active in Robotics as a hobby aren't children. I'm just about to turn 36, but I was dreaming about Lego Robots since I was 8. MG (...) (25 years ago, 22-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)
