You don't need to install Mindstorm to use NQC, only the spirit.ocx. RCX
Command Center is a great front-end to NQC. The RCX webpage at
http://www.cs.uu.nl/people/markov/lego/rcxcc/index.html has good
instructions for just installing spirit.ocx.
