The Scout (from the Robotics Discovery System) doesn't have a power
connector either. It is quite possible that the decision to remove the power
connector from Mindstorms products was made during the development of the
Scout.
There was only a single reference to the power connector in all the
documentation that came with the RIS. And Lego (as in TLG) never offered a
power pack for the RCX. So technically, since there was never a Lego product
that could be plugged into the connector, nothing has been changed.
Pitsco Lego Dacta had one in their catalog at one time. And of course we all
know that the power supply from the 9V trains will work, too.
