Yes, I wasn't talking about a perfect digital image input, only mentioned those DV camcorders because of size and image input quality (and auto-focus, optical zoom, steady-cam capability, etc...) ...*and* because I'll more likely spend major (...)   RE: Was (Tank Platform)

I know this isn't scientific or anything but this is what I have observed. If I have a bot with a "crazy" wheel, the direction that that wheel is pointing when the bot starts moving forward controls the bots direction more than anything else. And it (...)   Re: Ideal Tank Platform Was: adder-subtractor ????

(...) I guess - but surely - having an asymmetry in the robot's construction is more likely to cause it not to drive straight than the 1% to 2% due to the motor rotation direction. You may be a 'better' builder than I am - and perhaps be able to (...) (25 years ago, 23-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Ideal Tank Platform Was: adder-subtractor ????

(...) Yeah, I saw that. nice work, that. I figured I'd throw it in anyway on the principle that eliminating error of any source is always a noble cause. I like to use worm drives to 'turn the corner' anyway to get the extra torque so it's not a (...) (25 years ago, 23-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Very Newbie Question regarding remote control

(...) Well, the RCX (the computer "brick" that comes with the $200 Mindstorms set) has Infrared communications with the PC. The amount of RAM in the RCX is rather limited for fancy AI stuff - but plenty for taking simple commands *from* the AI (...) (25 years ago, 23-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Ideal Tank Platform Was: adder-subtractor ????

(...) Well, if you read my *long* post from a week or so ago, you'll know that motor mismatch makes up at least 11% of performance, motor direction perhaps 1% or at most 2%, and HOW YOU BUILD YOUR MODEL accounts for at least 7% ... even when you are (...) (...) No - I'm a Linux user and *none* of the software on the CD would work for me anyway. You don't need spirit.ocx for NQC programming. Download the firmware file from Lego's web site - that (and NQC which isn't on the CD anyway) is all you need (...) (25 years ago, 23-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

What specifically is the difference between RIS1.0 and RIS1.5

Does anyone have a part-by-part listing of the differences between RIS1.0 and RIS1.5? I am under the impression, for example, that there is a white clutch-type gear intended to permit a motor to continue turning if the drive train/robot becomes (...) (25 years ago, 23-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

  Where to find RIS?

Where can I buy the RIS. I would like to stay away from ebay, but it seems that everywhere is on backorder or not available. Please Help. Thank You, Greg Ericksen (25 years ago, 22-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Very Newbie Question regarding remote control

Mechanically, LEGO is beautiful to work with. The components are well selected for rapid prototyping. For example, you will find that the hole spacing in the beams and the center-to-center distances of the gears ...seem to work well together. (...) (25 years ago, 22-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: New guy on the blocks

I think that unless you are going to write your own communications routines, you will need spirit.ocx, and use its functions to talk to the RCX. If you do not use standard firmware, you will not need the cd. These options are also generally more (...) (25 years ago, 22-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: New guy on the blocks

Hi Francois, Like you said, if get the firmware from the Lego Mindstorms site and you use NQC, you should not need anything from the CD. Good luck, Gus (25 years ago, 22-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)
