Hey, Just wondered if anyone had seen Microsoft's newest IntelliMouse and, if so, if they had the same thought I did about it: this thing cries out to be hacked. Rob, I use these same encoders just as you do, and they work fine. However, the spacing of the encoders from thier targets is important for proper function. 1.5 to 2 mm works well for me. Adam, As far as interfacing to external devices, the inexpensive ones are wheel encoders, IR ranging, bumpers, sound sensors and visible light sensors. I've just got the IntelliMouse Explorer. I had problems at first on my Simpson's mouse mat, but then I tried it straight onto the desk top. It's very good and I have no problems with it at speed. I bought it to play Quake X with, but I haven't had (...) (26 years ago, 25-Oct-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Not bad for an international connection. I'd rate it as "tolerable." I've scanned 3 pages, but the images are crooked on two. It won't necessarily fry the chip. L293s (and the TI equivalent) have a thermal protection mode. If the chip gets too hot, it will turn itself off.
