I think whoever pointed you to webpagesthatsuck.com has a valid point, that
is, keep it simple. IMO, both of those sites are too busy, have too small
text, and don't give me any information at all. Especially for the site of
a company or organization, I want to know what the heck the company/org is
and does right away. Sure, both sites have some cool graphics, but I didn't
stay for more than a couple minutes because I had to strain my eyes to be
able to read the text (ie, I couldn't lean back in my chair as I normally
do), and I still have no idea what the purpose of either site is. They also
didn't load especially quickly, considering my 110 mbps connection. When I
visit a web site, I don't really feel like searching for the
navigation...I'll just leave instead.

Learning how to do the graphics is great, but learning how to use them
effectively and still keep your visitors is even better. Maybe the site
won't be quite as "cutting edge", but then again, "cutting edge" gets old
quickly. Timeless simplicity often works best.
