That's a good idea... but you can also shift by noise :)
My friend's first car was an older Ford Ranger pickup, with a manual, and
no tach. When I first rode in it, I was wondering how he knew when to shift - I
think his response was something like "when it gets really really loud" :)
Nowadays most cars have rev-limiters - Iain, I suspect your Tercel has one too.
Although I will not be held responsible if you decide to test it out, and as a
result have engine bits coming out of your tailpipe ;)
RX-7s have a buzzer at 7000RPM - but there's not much power beyond that anyways,
so you shift up. I love rotary Mazdas.
