I made a little label on my computer for my old car when I was learning how to
drive.  I calculated out the r/min based on the gear ratios for my car's
transmission as to when would be the best speed to shift into what gear at.

(...) That's a good idea... but you can also shift by noise :) My friend's first car was an older Ford Ranger pickup, with a manual, and no tach. When I first rode in it, I was wondering how he knew when to shift - I think his response was something (...) (21 years ago, 3-Nov-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
