What if, on something like the Phaeton, which, in the words of the reviewer, has
"vault like silence", you don't get that vibration or noise cues?  Hence, you
might need to use the tach.

(...) You can still use the speedometer. Unless you got lots of wheel spin there is a direct relationship between the tack and the speedometer. In fact the speedometer is often attached to the drive shaft so even wheel spin is removed. Derek (21 years ago, 3-Nov-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

(...) Actually, that's a good point. A lot of cars nowadays are so quiet at idle, that you really need to check the tach to make sure that the engine IS running.
