Scrapheap Challenge is the UK show by Channel4 which started a couple of
years ago. TLC bought the airing rights for North America and repackaged it
with bumpers (the intro and outros before commercials) under the name
"Junkyard Wars", complete with irritating theme song and ugly logo.
Scrapheap had three seasons, of which the second and third have already been
aired here. Those two seasons have both Cathy Rogers (the efferfescently
perky cute one) and Robert Llewellyn (from Red Dwarf etc). The first season
is currently being aired (tonight was offroad buggies), which only has
Robert Llewellyn. Each has been modified with the Junkyard theme.
However, for some crazy reason, TLC decided to do a complete American season
as well. The first US season was actually taped on the same set in the UK,
and featured all American teams who were flown over to participate.
(Previous, only one American team, the NERDS, competed on the UK show) The
overall consensus was that the US season sucked, because of the replacement
of Robert with American comic, George Gray. Who in fact, isn't that bad,
but the post seemed to have been done in the US, and all trace of British
humour removed.
There WILL be a fourth UK season featuring Robert and Cathy, and there will
also be a second US season, which apparently is going to be taped in the LA
area...
