So is that graininess in the out of focus areas:

intentional, or an artifact of your resizing application?

This was a very tricky image to get and the result wasn't that great anyways.

There's a few problems with shooting Lego at the Hobby Show:

a) Low light
b) Nowhere to stand or set a tripod as kids and people push you about.
c) Some Lego reads very hot (white bricks) and some reads poorly (black)

So, while shooting, I set the camera at a ridiculously high gain (ISO 1600) so I
could use a faster shutter and not pull out the tripod.  It also means you have
a very wide open aperture, which gives you a shallow depth of field.

The grain in Janey's face is due to the ISO1600 sensitivity, which isn't
particularily good on the EOS300D (I don't usually shot beyond ISO 800).
However, that's not the only story:

The angle of the lighting at the International Center Hall 1 is set up such that
the light is cast from behind you as you look at the displays.  There is no top
or rear lighting because the booth is under an overhang.  So where Janey is
crouching, there isn't any light, it's completely from the side where the camera
is.  Compounding this is the fact she's overshadowed by the very large
dollhouse, which is blocking more light.

As a result, despite having IS turned on (optical stablization) AND setting for ISO1600, Janey was almost completely dark in the original shot.   So, to get the composition to work (I wanted to show a giant looking in on a set of elves or whatever) I took a shot where Janey was lit well (I set the metering on her face properly), and composited it with the shot where the laundry room was lit well (the metering was set on the white bricks).

Making this worse was the fact WebAlbumGenerator (a nice little app with one
flaw) resaves the images itself....grr.  Compressing an object with high noise
increases artifacting.  So all the above issues are compounded by the album
generator.
