Wow.  That is lotsa good stuff, but great googly moogly!

This whole thing started 'cause I asked to run a 'mini block stacking'
competition.

We went from a 'lets build a nifty block stacking 'bot' to 'let's take advanced
calculus to figure out the scoring so that everyone can compete with any 'bot.'

This is how I see the competition--

Build a 'bot that fits within 8x8x8 inches that stacks the same colour blocks as
your starting square.

Scoring is the 'Fabulousinichi Scale' up to the top of the tower, or the wrong
coloured block, whichever comes first.

Done.

If this limits 'entry level' people from entering, then I'm all for a different
'entry level'--read separate--competition.  Not everyone could build a 'connect
4' bot so we had marble sorting.  If it's to be pure block sorting/return to
home square, or stack any block, so be it, but those 'bots woudln't compete with
the 'advanced' competition.  I'd rather see a separate competition, much like
block stacking/sumo from the past, we can do block sort-stacking/drag racing,
but again, being the accomodating such-n-such that I am, I'll go with what the
group decides

But let's get it a little simpler, shall we?

(...) You mean by counting ALL the blocks of your home colo[u]r? It seems like only counting up to the wrong color would offer a big penalty for non-sorting robots. If two non-sorting robots compete, the winner will be the lucky one, who is last to (...) (20 years ago, 26-Oct-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
