Just for purposes of this discussion, and hopefully of raising interest in
the event again, I suggest having two sumo divisions - a beginners division
for anyone who has never entered a sumo event anywhere before, and a master
division (call it what you will, that's not the issue here) for people who
have previously entered a sumo event (anywhere, not just here), and think
that they can build a much better one than something that just pushes other
robots around.  (Think of building something that uses offense not just
defense.)  Of course anyone can enter the master division, even if they've
never built a sumo robot before, but the beginner division should only be
for first timers.

I think that might splinter the number of entries.  The number of sumo
entries really often depends on who new we find to play and get into the
entire event spirit.  The major issues I have with returning sumo is a)
there's a dwindling number of sumo competitors (and brings people down when
they show up without anyone to compete against) and b) it just seems over done.

I'd also guess the folks in the master division we expect would be into
stacking.

Whether or not these two divisions are desirable, the main question is still
"will there be a sumo event?"

That's a question I can't answer.  A question for the group:  Are there at
least going to be four entries to make David's effort worthwhile?

(...) Umm, as usual I cant say. maybe there are MANY lurkers out there who will enter a sumo bot, but we will never know until game day. So, i hear by decree that there WILL be a SUMO game for the purposes of getting people who are beginners (or who (...) (24 years ago, 12-Nov-00, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

I would like to get this discussion on track again. (See the subject line.) There's been some discussion on other issues, which are important, but not immediately so, as they don't effect the next competition anyway. What I would like to know is: (...)
