I am not sure how solid the tables are if there is a full opening on one side
of the layout, I think it might open up fairly easily.  I we have an opening in
the outer ring, then more legs have to be made.  There will be 2N+2 legs, where
N equals the number of tables.
As to the width, 61 inches would be impossible to reach from just one
side.  If there are derailings, we need to be able to fix the problem.  That
would suggest a center hole.
Having the controllers outside is an interesting idea, when we had derails and
no one was manning the controls it took a mad dive into the middle to turn off
the power.  A kill switch on the outside would do for this problem.  I wouldn't
want the controllers to be jostled too much and fall to the ground.  As well
they would have to be out of the reach of spectators, unless we limit the
maximum speed.
I like the 'sloped' tables, staggered one third of a table going down.  It
would allow track at a different angle from the usual.
As far as bridges are concerned, I don't want us to plan more than Steve or
John can supply.  But they sure are nice!
Sorry I was so late in replying, it looks like others gave you the address for
the tables.  The old set of instructions was clearer than the current set.  I
could drop off a sample for you to examine while you were building more.  Do we
really want many more tables, I was hoping to replace most of my rolling stock
with MOCs, so I wouldn't have nearly the amount of material to show.
Michel

What do other people think about how the tables are laid out?  Does it
matter?  Do we want a plain oval, or an oddball shape?  Center hole or
controllers outside?  Long bridges or short bridges?

Michel, if you can either mail or e-mail me the plans for the tables, then I
can make more and/or finish the ones partly done.  I seem to recall you saying
that you didn't have much time to do more than just legs.  Over the next few
months, I'm going to have more time for things that don't involve leaving the
house. :)

That could alleviate some of the transport concerns of a larger layout, too.

I'm having fun with this... It's like puzzle pieces. :) Here's some more table layouts: (URL) of these days I'll get bored with musical tables, and actually lay some (virtual) track... What do other people think about how the tables are laid out? (...) (24 years ago, 6-Oct-00, to lugnet.org.ca.nalug)
