Wow. By a strange coincidence, 1983 is the year I first ever used a computer,
an Apple ][ (who needs lower case letters, anyway?) located in the hallway
outside of my third grade classroom.
Thus demonstrated to be a computer geek from way back, I can authoritatively
say that I sure assumed "froup" to be a typo.

You have used that term a number of times now and I have no idea what it means, except in context, as some sort of cute back formation from newsgroup and something else, meaning just "newsgroup". The Jargon File (1) is silent (...) (26 years ago, 4-Dec-98, to lugnet.general)
