Dang.  I was reading about this stuff, just the other week.  Seems like it
all boiled down to this: if they announce the songs ahead of time, that
gives the listener the power to change the station if they aren't
interested.  And announcements after-the-song are perceived as boring, also
causing people to change-the-station.

Those that hate dj talking consider all of it boring, so radio folks have no
remedy for that. But for someone who didn't catch the name of a song at its
beginning and liked it, back announcing is very useful. Optimally, all new
stuff should be announced after the song, and all older stuff announced
before, or even not at all cuz it's been heard before.

Not knowing the info on a song is frustrating, but it doesn't cause an
immediate change-the-station urge.  Just the opposite--you hang around, in
case they bother to tell you what you want to know.

Yep.

Is this practice the height of laziness, or what?  Is this common elsewhere?

Yes, and yes.

Not usually laziness, often inexperience and lack of good sense. You'd be
surprised - a lot of radio people, especially in larger markets ain't lazy, but
no one said they were smart.
