    Credit reports anybody? —Julie Krenz
Well, it's not exactly "off-topic.fun", (but since you all seem to be an intelligent bunch, I'd thought I'd ask here) does anybody know how to get a free copy of your credit report? I've done some searches and the sites I've run across want a fee. I (...) (26 years ago, 17-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Credit reports anybody? —Jeremy H. Sproat
(...) From my experience you should probably ask your bank manager which credit agency they get it from, then contact the credit agency directly by phone or mail. I would be pretty nervous about getting my credit report across the Internet. Another (...) (26 years ago, 17-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Credit reports anybody? —Larry Pieniazek
If you contact the agencies directly the fee is 8 bucks. If you first get turned down for something because of a report, the fee is free. Takes a letter, though, in each case. If you call, you'll pay 30. (...) (26 years ago, 17-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Credit reports anybody? —Israel Alanis
Fees for your credit report vary from state to state. In some states, you're allowed one free copy per year. But, if you were denied credit (in the last 60 days) the credit reporting agency, who's report on which the the denial was based, is (...) (26 years ago, 17-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

By the way, the other two major credit reporting agencies are Experian (formerly TRW): www.experian.com and Trans Union: www.transunion.com (26 years ago, 17-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Credit reports anybody? —Julie Krenz
(...) I remember hearing that. (...) I've heard that too. (...) Yeah, some of the web sites I came across looked suspicious. It was suggested in an earlier post I contact my bank. I think I'll do that and see what they have to say. I really feel no (...) (26 years ago, 18-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Do you know what it felt like when I was trying to gather my medical records before coming to Germany (I've had a bit of a nomadic life) and I was told that it would cost me $5 for the (...)      (...) I hear you. I needed my medical records from a hospital once that wanted to charge me the same kind of outrageous fee. When I told them I wouldn't pay them a buck a page to make a nickel photocopy so I'd like to take them to Kinko's and copy (...) (26 years ago, 19-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

(...) The reason? They "own" your records, and you leaving with them is tantamount to theft. Just for fun: try touching your file the next time you have an appointment! Beth (26 years ago, 19-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Credit reports anybody? —Mike Stanley
(...) Maybe. Their justification for charging me a buck a page was they had to pay their employee to do that. I asked if the employee made $60/hour since I figured he or she could probably copy a page per minute at minimum. Didn't appreciate the (...) (26 years ago, 19-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Credit reports anybody? —Christopher L. Weeks
(...) I've been faced with this insanity twice. Once I had to convince a doc-in-the-box clinic to give me x-ray films to take to my real doctor. They eventually agreed with the provision that I would bring them back next time I was near. I figured (...) (26 years ago, 22-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Credit reports anybody? —Jasper Janssen
(...) I would be pretty nervoius about _someone_else_ getting _my_ credit report over the internet. But given cash, that's a trivial thing to do. I personally wouldn't care if _I_ was the one these were being sent to... Jasper (26 years ago, 18-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)
