I think up until now he has done what the law allows and I don't have a
problem with it.  Remember he did not ask for the first recount, that was
automatic.  He asked for this one as is his right under Florida law.  If he
tries to go for more then I would have a problem with it.

Yes, but is he not inciting other to take action as individuals? I'm sure I
heard that.

Well thats a good point.  While I don't think that Gore will file a lawsuit in
say Palm Beach over the validity of the ballot I would expect people from his
campaign are probably encouraging private citizens to file suit and giving them
pointers on how to go about it.  I have actually flip-flopped on this myself to
some extent in that at first I though the people of Palm Beach were somehow
disenfranchised but now as I think about it more I feel more that "those are
the breaks" and people just have to live with their mistakes.

I will bet that type of ballot is not used again for some time because of this
but I don't blame the ballot 100%.  I think some of the blame goes to the blind
blue-hairs that either couldn't see or didn't have the common sense to ask for
help.

Now even though I did not vote using this type of punch card in this election
(My ballot was just a fill in the circle and very straight forward) I did use
this type of ballot in the past and i will say I didn't like it.

The main problem is that while it looks pretty obvious when looking at the
ballot straight on, once it is loaded in the ballot booth and you are looking
at it at about 90 degrees it is hard to tell which hole goes with which
selection.  I had to concentraight pretty hard when I voted using these ballots
so I can see where problems could arise.

(...) I was talking about just this over the weekend. I this the ballot may well have been OK if it was expected. (...) A good quote I recieved by e-mail today: "You mean to tell me that those old ladies in Palm Beach can play 15 bingo cards simultaneously - but can't punch a ballot?" james (24 years ago, 13-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
