Simplistic answer is that they DID have cash to spend, it was economic
boycott that finally broke the "back of the bus" thing with buses, and
was going to break down a great deal more quite soon. As for the legal
barriers, Laws REQUIRING segregated facilities in private enterprise are
just as immoral as laws REQUIRING unsegregated facilities.

Further, to the extent that any minority is being denied equal
protection under the law, that's actionable. And, with shielding from
personal liability removed from government officials, turning firehoses
and guard dogs loose on peaceful demonstrations would have proven to be
QUITE expensive for George Wallace et. al.

Would gays be open about being gay like they are now, without the
entire society's movement towards tolerance of everything?

How much of that is due to quotas and treating private property like
public goods (which is what requiring a business to serve all comers is)
without compensation? I'd say very little, but it's hard to prove one
way or the other.
