Interesting op ed piece yesterday analysing Buchanan. Hate that guy but
he makes a point that the US entered WW II only after we were attacked,
and when it was too late to do much about the ongoing slaughter. Could
it be our current ineffective flailing around trying to prevent small
scale atrocities (not very effectively) is some sort of guilt for how
badly we mismanaged our entry?

You know my stand on this -- we must intervene because we're in a "brother's
keeper" position.  Yadda yadda yadda.  Old argument.

It's an interesting question, though, about the U.S. feeling guilty for our
"mismanaged entry" into WWII.  We almost used the bombing of Pearl Harbor to
rush to the aid of someone else unaffected by the enemy who attacked us;
obviously, there were other reasons for the U.S. entering the war, but I
suspect that they were more economic in nature, not messiahnistic.

Never mind the fact that we've mismanaged every atrocity situation we've
intervened with.

I think the U.S.'s anti-atrocity police stance was more of a role we picked
up after realizing the social impact on business that the Holocaust had.
It's good business to take care of people who deal with the people you deal
with.

Case in point:  We're involved in the human rights conflict in Indonesia.
If we hadn't, the problem may have made an impact on the economy of the
region, threatening our trade status with China, Japan, Australia, etc.

Cheers,

Well put, Sproat. WE MUST NEVER FORGET. I'm not 100% sure my parents didn't have some blood on their hands and I'm not 100% sure what to do about it.
