So I can understand Richards dilemma, but pointing to filth on Lugnet
probably violates the TOS as much as posting it yourself, as it allows
greater access to minors to see the trash, especially in Lugnet.General.

Yeah.  The whole thing is a tricky situation, lets let that part of it die and
work to come to an agreement on how to effectively deal with situations like
this in the future.

Well, I think the initial issue is resolved.  However, as the main forebearers
of the Community Policing advocates (you, as in Larry P, and Tim Courtney)
should probably come up with some simple FAQ's and some procedures to make
sure that if something like this happens again....there is something in
place....and that it is posted in an appropriate spot.

Good idea.  I just don't know what group to follow this discussion up to ;-)

lugnet.people maybe?  I won't set one until I get a few suggestions.  Maybe a
new lugnet.admin.community is merited?

Anyways....

What I really think is we need to focus on an informal set of community
developed and supported guidelines, focusing on polite correction of
inappropriate posts and policy on how to avoid posting inappropriate content in
situations like this last one.

As far as an FAQ goes... a few ideas:

1) Someone posted in the wrong group, what should I do?

A: Politely post a reply to the person, suggesting that they might get a better
response if they move the message or post similar messages elsewhere in the
future.  Keep the reinforcement positive, not negative.

2) Someone just put some rather colorful language in their post, what should I
do?

A: Politely post a public reply in the same group, requesting the person refrain
from using those words in the future.  Point out that repeatedly the
administration has ruled that profanity and vulgarity doesn not belong in
LUGNET, both in the TOS and in comments on individual situations.  Do not
criticize the poster, just address their actions.

If the poster replies positively and accepts correction, the situation has been
corrected.

If you are challenged rudely by the poster in a reply which debates the
correction, again, politely re-assert your position in the newsgroup and
crosspost to lugnet.admin.general so the administrators can pick up on the
situation.  Either they will get the point, apologize, and go their merry way,
or the LUGNET administration will get involved.

----

Those are just two example situations, and example FAQ texts, to get the ideas
flowing.  Lets discuss this, it sounds good.  If we can all agree on how to
politely address situations which are detrimental to the LUGNET community as
members of the community, we can 1) lighten the load on the admins and 2) create
an atmosphere of respect for each other, knowing that we all hold each other in
check.

That's all for now, I got tons of stuff to do in the wake of BW.

(...) Well, it looks like problem solved...but you are right (and not trying to compound the issue by "slapping richards hand", as several hands already did) I totally agree with Lar on the info at hand....sure there was a problem that needed to be (...)
