And somewhere between these extremes is the place where we're content as
employees. Somewhere where we feel that companies are being fair enough and
charitable enough, without overstepping the boundaries of each.

Right! People have different ideas of what is most important in their lives,
and life in general. For some people it's their family, others their
friends, some people are just plain hedonistic and live for their own
selfish pleasure (not that I'm judging anyone but I'm just putting it out
there). So, because people value things differently they have different
priorities. Some people put profit ahead of family or loved ones, and vice
versa. Some companies are "charitable" and some are "cold" and I suppose
people with similar values will gravitate to those companies. For example,
you'll never see me joining the Marines but others think "Hey, that sounds
cool!"

And of
course the actual question Shiri proposed was is giving time off for PMS
symptoms too unjust? Or is *not* allowing time off too uncharitable? Is
there a happy medium between the two wherein a balanced policy can exist?
Personally, I think it's only possible in theory-- in practice such a policy
would become abused and ducked behind.

Interesting. Why do you think it would be abused and ducked behind? In your
opinion, is it about their dishonesty and laziness? Is it lack of
satisfaction with the job and any excuse not to work? How abused do you
think it would it be? What do you think? The reason I ask is that we
shouldn't have the attitude of not trying something new for fear it may
abused (though it certainly might be). It may seem futile, but we improve
through trial and error.

And certain people would abuse it more than others, I think-- and of course SOME people abusing it leads to more, when their abuse becomes apparent. And SOME become offended. Etc. (...) (...) Potentially being one of the subjects of this post (?) I'd like to make a distinction here-- I think the first time I was forced to realize it was reading Emanuel Levinas-- the distinction between the morals of charity and justice. Justice is (...)
