FYI, I continue to buy from Susan too (buy a LOT, actually), but find myself
having to do the same thing - take the trash out immediately after receiving a
package from her, and drop her parts right into cleaner for a minimum of one day.

I love the parts I get from her, I just wish I could use them right away, instead
of soaking them for sometimes days to get rid of the reek.

objection as to warrant negative feedback and in fact, the buyer may be
perfectly willing to continue buying from that seller, understanding that the
items they get will have this objectionable feature. I have continued to buy
from a seller on eBay  (susan45301@aol.com) who sells wonderful lots of LEGO,
often new parts, describes her items well, is very responsive on shipping and
holding your items for a week or two while a string of auctions complete, in
other words, an A++ seller, EXCEPT someone in her place of buisiness smokes
like a chimney. I have never received a package which reeks more of smoke from
any other seller. The smoke smell is so bad that I immediately throw out the
packaging and dunk the pieces in a cleaning bath. I would love it if there was
a good way to force this information out in the public without risking my eBay
feedback rating, or unduly trashing hers. I suppose I could e-mail her, and
point out that while I am willing to deal with the issue, she is potentially
exposing someone to a serious health risk (the way I react to the packages
suggests that someone with asthma could possibly have a severe reaction
triggered). I have chosen to broadcast this information here on Lugnet, but
only after a somewhat lengthy discussion convinced me that I should. Of course
another unfortunate thing about this situation is that she is losing some
money. I often decide not to bid on items because I decide that dealing with
the smoke is just not worth the effort for the particular pieces.

I do find it curious that a seller would get miffed about a positive feedback
that mentions some problem with the item. Of course it is probably best that
one clarify the issue with the seller first (they may not realize that the
issue you had with the item was a real issue, and may be quite willing to
correct it - an early purchase off eBay was for some pirate ships which
arrived in a box mostly assembled with some crumpled newspaper around them. No
internal bag to keep parts from being lost. The box arrived with a fairly
large hole. Who knows how many pieces were lost. I mentioned this to the
seller, and the next time I bought something from them, they packaged it much
better (and then on that 2nd sale, I mentioned good packing in the feedback, I
didn't mention packing on the first feedback).

Ultimately, the online fleamarket industry is going to have to deal with these
issues. Feedback wars are not the solution (and I suspect that the way eBay
feedback is used really isn't as effective as it should be). One thing which
may help the situation is for e-payments to become so much the way to do
buisiness that the buyer feedback is essentially automatically generated (eBay
sends you a "bill", you click on the "pay" button, the seller gets his money,
your buying feedback gets adjusted automatically, you then get to give the
seller feedback when you actually receive the item, and they get to respond to
your feedback, and have a grievance process for dealing with unfair feedback).

  Smoky parts from Susan

I too have found Susan's stuff to reek of smoke. I usually air it out for a few days before setting it aside for later sorting. I agree with Tom and Frank's thoughts....perhaps one of us could e-mail her and ask about the situation?? Is there (...) (24 years ago, 11-Sep-00, to lugnet.market.theory)
