I think this is an interesting point because it exposes a (major?)
loophole that TRU needs to fix.
Actually, if you take the slip and product back to Toys R Us, you
would not make money in that way, at least I don't think so. On a
second sheet that was stapled to my receipt (and to my free Pokemon
playmat, whatever the heck that is for) it says that you need to bring
a copy of the receipt that they emailed you as well, which contains
the correct price. It goes on to say that if you don't have that
receipt, but do have the packing slip, the original purchasers credit
card will be credited (since the order # is on the packing slip).
BUT...
What if you have no receipt? Both of the TRU stores in my area here
(Madison, WI) have a sign up that says: "Returns without a receipt
will be refunded in the form of Geoffrey Dollars..." which as most of
you probably know, are basically TRU gift certificates. So on some
sale items on TRU.com you could theoretically return it to a TRU
retail store and receive store credit for the MSRP. Not worth it for
most items, but I'm sure that an unscrupulous consumer could make it
worth his while on a 50%+ off sale item.
If I were a TRU policy-maker I would also worry about the confusion
factor here for the employees. At the two stores in town here, more
than 3/4ths of the employees are probably aged 16 or under, and the
turnover rates seem pretty high (lots of fresh faces every few weeks).
I am in no way implying that 16 year olds are incompetent, but based
on my own recent return/exchange experiences, it is NOT that hard to
confuse exchange-counter employees who have only been there for a week
or two. The holiday season just adds to the confusion (my girlfriend
was able to return about $80 in merchandise to a local Shopko that she
had just had sitting in the closet since she bought it, with no
receipt, and got her refund in cash).
I guess that if somebody wanted to, there's never been a better time
to exploit!
