Actually, you're probably wrong about this. If you looked at the
little blue line above their page you would have seen something like
"Welcome McDonalds Winner" or something like that. MANY of these
offers are urls or coupon codes that are intended for a specific
group of people (say people who buy a 20 pack of nuggets and win a
prize or something) and not for general public consumption.
McDonald's probably picks up part of the tab, inserts maybe 10,000
of them in McNugget cartons, figuring less than half of those will
even be used, and TRU _maybe_ takes a small hit as well.
Then some enterprising young person gets one and posts it to a
newsgroup, or on a bargain page. Then it spreads. Pretty soon what
was intended to be a deal that maybe 5,000 people take advantage of
(and they probably figure a lot of them will order a $30 or $40 toy
and just get $9 off, not a $9 toy for free) turns into a deal that
50,000 people or more cash in on, some of them multiple times
through various e-mail accounts/credit cards, etc.
Now, is it stupid for companies to still issue generic coupon codes
and such, thinking they will stay contained within a small group?
Yes it is.
But it's also a little silly to resent companies cancelling orders
that are, in their view, placed fraudulantly, isn't it? Did you get
the code in a box of McNuggets or did you get it off
flamingoworld.com like everyone else here?
I'm not preaching here - I used the $9 off $9 as well. Haven't
received the order yet, have no idea if I will. I just know I won't
moan about it if I don't.

| (...) I did get a coupon from McD's, and I just guess that I don't care for businesses to offer something that they won't back up. Also, credit cards are sacred to me, don't like it when they get messed with. Sorry if I sounded like an angry youth, (...) (25 years ago, 3-Dec-99, to lugnet.market.shopping)
